Job Description

The HPC Systems Engineer is a newly created position at Virginia Tech National Security Institute. This position will work with faculty at VTNSI to undertake software development projects and to explore and deploy new approaches to HPC software. This position will provide tier 2/3 technical support for the entire institute. The successful candidate will investigate emerging technologies in operation of research computing, storage, and networking. They will help develop tools for increased productivity and collaboration.

The Virginia Tech National Security Institute is the newest of three Thematic Research Institutes at Virginia Tech (the other two being the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute). Thematic institutes at Virginia Tech pursue and execute sponsored research and experiential learning programs, and they have deep relationships with sponsors, unique research facilities, and unique talent (typically research faculty). The NSI's mission is to perform interdisciplinary research and provide experiential learning in Blacksburg and the greater Washington DC metropolitan area to strengthen technology, standards, public policy, and the National Security Innovation Base. The objectives of the NSI includes: cultivation of a vibrant ecosystem of industry, government, and academic partners to transition research, knowledge, and talent into sustainable capabilities; and development of the next generation of leaders to strengthen the National Security workforce. The nucleus of the NSI is built around the Ted and Karyn Hume Center for National Security and Technology, the Virginia Tech Applied Research Corporation, and the School for Public and International Affairs. However, it is expected that the NSI broaden its reach across the unique array of academic disciplines at Virginia Tech that can strength the instruments of National Power; diplomacy, information, military, and economy.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related computational science discipline, or bachelor's degree in these fields and significant work experience.
  • Strong experience in Linux and familiarity with shell scripting
  • Strong experience in automation technologies such as ansible
  • Familiarity with high performance and parallel computing software and technologies
  • Programming experience in multiple major languages
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex issues in a team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast pace, results-oriented environment.
  • Excellent communication skills to include ability to write clear documentation for users and developers
  • US citizenship

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with development and deployment of web services
  • Experience working in a research environment
  • Experience in developing and implementing scientific software applications
  • Proven experience to undertake complex software projects, system integration projects, develop systems tools, and use system performance metrics in problem resolution and efficient use of production systems.
