Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Geography or Planning by July 1, 2022 (start of the position). Candidates should have graduate-level courses or professional experience in the disciplines of both Geography and Planning.

Candidates must have teaching experience and a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, student mentoring, and research. In addition, candidates should have a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Description of the Department or Unit

As one of the departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Geography and Planning promotes excellence in the following four interconnected areas:
  1. the scientific understanding of the spatial patterns and processes within the physical systems of the earth's surface and atmosphere;
  2. the understanding of human systems in spatial context;
  3. the role of planning in achieving a better and more sustainable quality of life for people within those systems; and,
  4. the understanding and application of geospatial analysis and technology in geography and planning.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Candidates should show a desire to involve both undergraduate and graduate students in their research programs. They should have a demonstrated record of teaching that shows a passion for experiential learning, interactive methods, and the application of theory and concepts to current real-world environmental and climate issues. Research foci could include environmental policy and planning, climate adaptation, climate justice, and equity, biogeography, land systems and complexity, wildfires, or energy and water resources.

The teaching load will be three courses each semester. Instructional duties will include a large introductory Global Change of the Biosphere course, Planning courses (Town, City, Regional Planning, Planning Techniques, and/or Planning for Climate Resilience), and GIS courses (Geospatial Technology). The candidate would teach software-intensive courses that involve GIScience and Planning Design. The capability of teaching a GIS programming course will be a desirable quality.
