Job Description

The Technical Editor is responsible for the editing, formatting, and production of technical reports and other technical documents such as journal articles, proposals, website content, and press releases. The Technical Editor is responsible for ensuring correct grammar and formatting, appropriate tone and style, a high level of clarity and cohesiveness, and responsiveness to the specific document guidelines. The Technical Editor also develops and organizes a variety of document resource and template materials to assist in future report and documentation production. Finally, the Technical Editor will work within the Editing Team to maintain the schedule of future VTTI reports and ensure the timely submission of project deliverables.
The successful candidate will work both independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision and be able to work under tight deadlines while managing multiple concurrent tasks. Candidates should possess excellent editorial skills, communication skills, and attention to detail. The candidate should be comfortable editing highly technical scientific content and be interested in learning more about VTTI's research domains to enhance their editorial skills. Experience within an academic environment, understanding of the research process, and/or familiarity with the government contracting process is a plus.
The Technical Editor will join VTTI's Editing Team and will report to the Manager of Technical Writing and Editing.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in English, communications, science/engineering, or equivalent related training or experience
  • Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to understand and communicate technical information to a variety of audiences
  • Experience with the entire document production process: printing and design; electronic and print media; and publications principles, concepts, and techniques.
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Word

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with reference management software (e.g, EndNote, Zotero) and LaTeX or LaTeX editors
  • Experience working under the constraints of different style guides (e.g., Government Publishing Office, American Psychological Association), particularly with regard to references and citations.
