JOB SUMMARY

The Assistant Director manages the operations of the Students with Disabilities Center (CSD) and coordination and provision of approved accommodations by providing direction to the assistive technology teams. Under the general direction of the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and the Director of the CSD, manages the operations of the Center and coordination and provision of approved accommodations by providing direction to the assistive technology teams. Provides leadership for Division-wide and Center specific strategic initiatives. Provides guidance on the ongoing review and updating of Center policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal and state laws, as well as recent OCR/DOJ agreements, settlements, and court cases. Ensures that all University entities comply with the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 and other relevant state and federal legislation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Supervises the assistive technology team in the coordination and provision of accommodations and services related to technology according to established CSD and University policies and procedures, including the selection, piloting and procurement of technology (hardware and software licenses), technology demonstrations, training and support for students, development of technology/transition plans, collaboration with University offices in supporting technology use in teaching and learning, such as CETL, ITS/Classroom Technology team, etc.
  2. As a member of CSD’s Leadership Team, assumes shared responsibility for the following duties:
    • Identifies and evaluates current staffing roles and responsibilities; directs policies, procedures, and assessments related to specific functional areas; monitors and maintains acceptable standards for quality assurance in the provision of accommodations and services; maintains reviews and updates CSD’s policies and procedures.
    • Develops strategic initiatives for the Center in alignment with Division Initiatives and University’s academic plan; provides leadership to the Accommodations team, Assistive Technology team, and front office staff in the implementation of those initiatives.
    • Collaborates with the General Counsel’s Office, the Attorney General’s Office, OACE and OIE regarding disability discrimination complaints, OCR investigations and agreements, reporting, and drafting/updating of University policies and procedures.
    • Represents the Center on various University, divisional and departmental committees in order to assure compliance with federal mandates; serves as a liaison for designated units to address issues of accessibility.
  3. Develops, evaluates, interprets, and enforces University policies and procedures with regard to students with disabilities and serves as an authoritative source on federal and state legislation. Interprets court/government agency rulings, which may affect services for students with disabilities.
  4. Serve as a University authority for faculty, staff, and departments regarding the University’s digital, academic, and programmatic access obligations under the law and University guidelines; collaborates with Office of Institutional Equity (ADA and Deputy ADA Coordinators) and Human Resources (ADA Case Manager) regarding ADA-related accommodation requests, approval and coordination. Develops training material regarding ADA compliance for faculty, teaching assistants, and staff.
  5. Manages the Center’s research and assessment initiatives; establishes appropriate timelines for research and assessment activities; maintains compliance with established Student Affairs and IRB protocols.
  6. Oversees the development, implementation, and distribution of resource materials for current students, prospective students, faculty/staff/administration, parents and family members, and secondary personnel; serves as the liaison between the Center and University Communications regarding media inquiries.
  7. May manage an assigned caseload of students with permanent and/or temporary disabilities by engaging in the interactive process with students, faculty and staff as indicated.
  8. Responsible for special projects, such as internal and external program reviews, which may be on going or short-term and which require planning, coordination, management of a team, and thorough knowledge of the Center’s mission, policies, and procedures.
  9. Performs related duties and special assignments as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in special education, rehabilitation or other related field and at least 6 years of experience working with students with disabilities in higher education. Two years of experience must be serving as an advanced or senior team member or working as a project lead OR Master’s degree and four years of experience working with students with disabilities in higher education. 
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly and succinctly document engagement in the interactive process with students, parents/guardians, faculty and staff as indicated in case management system. 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate information effectively to groups with different backgrounds and experience (i.e. students, parents/guardians, colleagues). 
  • Demonstrated experience applying knowledge of the unique needs of individuals with disabilities, including knowledge of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and its amendments, and other relevant state and federal legislation
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations. 
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills necessary for effective work relationships. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of and stated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity issues.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in special education, rehabilitation, higher education administration, or other related field.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating academic accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated experience in post-secondary disability service provision. 
  • Demonstrated experience managing professional staff and graduate students in a unionized environment, and student employees on daily tasks and large, long-term projects. 
  • Demonstrated experience with project management. 
  • Demonstrated experience with the use and applicability of assistive technology for students with disabilities in an academic setting.
