Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor degree in a related field.
  • At least three (3) years of progressive professional experience in the design, implementation, and administration of fitness programs. A completed two-year Graduate Assistantship will be counted as one year of professional experience.
  • At least two (2) years of supervising staff experience in the area of fitness.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
License/Certification Required
  • Group Fitness Instructor certification through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), American Council on Exercise (ACE), and/or Aerobics & Fitness Association of America (AFAA) AND/OR Certified Personal Trainer through American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), and/or American Council on Exercise (ACE).
AND/OR
  • Certified Personal Trainer through American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), and/or American Council on Exercise (ACE).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a related area.
  • Practical experience and understanding of collegiate recreational fitness programs.
  • Hold two (2) or more current specialty group fitness certifications: ZUMBA, SPIN, Barre, TRX, Yoga, etc.
  • Active involvement in higher education national organizations (NIRSA, ACPA, etc).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Appalachian State University invites interested applicants for the position of Assistant Director of Fitness and Wellness to become a part of the University Recreation (UREC) team as we facilitate an inclusive environment where recreation and wellness opportunities transform, engage, and care for the App State community. 

This position is primarily responsible for managing the overall vision, administration, fiscal management, implementation, and supervision of the Fitness and Wellness Programs with University Recreation.

The Assistant Director of Fitness and Wellness reports to the Associate Director of Programs.

You will have the opportunity to:
Program Operations
  • Coordinate the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of student staff including two Graduate Assistants, 15-20 Group Exercise Instructors, 8-12 Personal Trainers, 4 Program Managers, and 25-30 Weight Room Attendants. 
  • Develop and implement a plan to intentionally create inclusive opportunities integrating Fitness and Wellness initiatives.
  • Provide programming leadership including general fitness, group exercise, personal training and educational workshops for students, faculty and staff.
  • Provide institutional leadership with our campus collaborators to maintain and further develop the AppState Gold Rated Exercise is Medicine program.
  • Develop and maintain a Group Exercise Instructor and Personal Trainer training programs to develop new and existing student staff members.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to Graduate Assistants for Fitness and Wellness while creating a working environment that fosters growth and student development.
  • Design and implement all Fitness and Wellness outreach strategies including social media, website, and special events.
  • Manage the scheduling for all staff to ensure adequate staff coverage for all programs and facilities including weight rooms, group exercise classes, personal training appointments, on-site fitness workshops, and special events.
  • Continue professional development by involvement in professional organizations, presenting at workshops and conferences, participating in regular continuing education.
  • Assist other staff members with special events and programs as requested by the department.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
  • Hold self, students, and staff members accountable to departmental expectations of creating an inclusive environment at UREC facilities and programs.
  • Promote inclusive ways to advocate for the needs of all students.
  • Maintain sensitivity to different perspectives and identities.
  • Challenge cultural norms to explore change.

Student Development
  • Design, coordinate, and lead training opportunities that focus on the growth and development of student self-awareness, leadership, wellness initiatives, and employability skill sets.
  • Teach CPR, AED, and First Aid classes for University Recreation Student Staff and App State community participants.
  • Develop and coordinate staff appreciation initiatives in order to retain student employees and build a sense of belonging within the team.

Fiscal Management
  • Budget, track, and reconcile all expenses related to the Fitness and Wellness areas on a monthly basis.
  • Assist in the annual budgeting process for the Fitness and Wellness program. This includes developing, forecasting, and reporting on revenues and expenses related to Fitness and Wellness areas. Total budgetary oversight is $152,000 which includes student staff wages, expenditures for new equipment, and maintenance of existing equipment.

Risk Management
  • Provide oversight for risk management related to Fitness Programs, Group Exercise, Personal Training, and the Weight Rooms (Quinn Center, Student Recreation Center, Mt. Mitchell Fitness Center).

  • Monitor group fitness and personal training trends and recommend modifications to current programs, equipment, risk management policies, and operational procedures.
