Assistant/Associate Professor of Illustration

The Illustration Department at the Cleveland Institute of Art is seeking applicants to fill two full-time faculty positions as a ranked Assistant or Associate Professor. CIA is looking for creative and diverse individuals with a current studio practice, connections to industry professionals and suggested college-level teaching experience. 

The ideal candidate should have extensive professional industry experience and exceptional skills in both traditional and digital media. The candidate will be expected to teach courses related to various aspects of the illustration industry that includes research, conceptual thinking, visual storytelling, traditional and digital methods (drawing, painting, and design), business, marketing, self-promotion, and a strong knowledge of past and contemporary Illustration practices. Candidates will have a thorough understanding of the current markets as well as a vision for emerging applications. 

Candidates will be expected to teach 3 studio courses per semester, participate in institutional service through committees, departmental planning, and curriculum development.

  • Proficiency with traditional methods and techniques, including drawing and painting 
  • Solid understanding of the elements and principles of design
  • Proficiency in traditional and digital media, including Adobe Creative Suite, and suggested experience in Animate, AfterEffects, Maya or Blender. 
  • Industry knowledge of concept art, visual development, and surface design is a plus.


  • College-Level Teaching experience and/ or Art Direction in various areas of illustration, highly suggested 
  • 5+ years of professional illustration industry experience.
  • Strong network of contacts with other professionals, agencies, and documented client list
  • A team player committed to building and maintaining a professional and inclusive work environment 
  • Knowledge of contemporary visual culture, especially history and theory of illustration

Semi-finalist candidates will be interviewed by phone or video conference, and will need to submit:

  1. Up to 20 examples of Student Work if applicable and accompanying image list (including title, date, media)
  2. 3 letters of recommendation 

Finalists will be interviewed in Spring 2022 through video conferences and/or campus visits. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States on or before July 1, 2022.
