Position Summary:

The School of Arts & Sciences provides excellence in learning opportunities for all students at SUNY Plattsburgh through a core liberal arts education. We train students who can think critically, have mastered their discipline, can communicate effectively and are broadly educated. The Psychology Department offers opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students to learn about psychology as a scientific discipline. We are seeking an individual with a clinical, neuropsychology, developmental, or school psychology area of specialization. The successful candidate will be committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service in an institution dedicated primarily to undergraduate education. Responsibilities will include teaching at least two undergraduate or graduate courses per semester in biopsychology, neuropsychology, and/or other courses associated with the candidate's expertise; engaging graduate students and/or undergraduate students in clinical and research endeavors; and working with clients in our Neuropsychology Clinic and Psychoeducational Services. Postdoctoral supervision for licensure is available on site. This position includes the possibility of optional clinical work during the summer that would generate extra service salary. The successful candidate may be asked to teach courses in a distance learning format.


Primary responsibilities for this position will include teaching at least two courses per semester (biopsychology, neuropsychology, and other courses associated with the candidate's clinical expertise), engaging graduate students and undergraduate students in clinical and research endeavors, and working with clients in the Neuropsychology Clinic.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in a psychology program is required for appointment as an Assistant Professor. ABDs will be considered for appointment at a lesser (qualified) rank and salary, upon proof that the applicant's defense of their dissertation will be scheduled within the first year of the appointment. A successful ABD applicant will receive promotion to the rank of Assistant Professor and a salary increment at the start of the semester following the award of the terminal degree. An ABD will be limited to a one-year appointment, subject to renewal for one year only (2 years maximum).
  • Ability to complete the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) and obtain licensure in New York State within the first two years of appointment. Reappointment after the second year is contingent upon successful completion of the EPPP and licensure in New York State. NYS licensure requirements are detailed here:
  • Demonstrated skills and expertise in teaching and research
  • Demonstrated clinical expertise
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with faculty, staff, and administrators

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate from a clinical, neuropsychology, or school psychology program
  • Completed New York State licensure as a psychologist or eligible to take the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP),, prior to the time of appointment
  • Experience teaching biopsychology, neuropsychology, and/or other courses associated with the candidate's expertise
  • Strong record of teaching effectiveness
  • Record of scholarly activity that would allow for engagement of undergraduate and/or school psychology graduate students in meaningful roles
