The Department of Exercise Science at the University of South Carolina (UofSC) Arnold School of Public Health (ASPH; www.sph.sc.edu) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2022. Highly qualified applicants may be considered for Associate Professor. The successful candidates will have, or be able to develop, collaborative multi-disciplinary, translational research programs with a focus on applied physiology, exercise, and health which complement or enhance research within the department and across the ASPH.

Position: Exercise and Nutrition. Research programs of particular interest will be focused on interactions between exercise and diet, including, but not limited to, those with a primary emphasis on human performance, microbiome, nutritional supplements, sex differences, and/or obesity.

The successful candidates will have an earned doctoral degree at the time of appointment in exercise science, kinesiology, nutrition, neuroscience, or related fields, and demonstrated potential for an outstanding record of research accomplishments, publications, and extramural funding to support a research program and for serving as an effective instructor and mentor. Applicants wishing to be considered for the rank of Associate Professor must have a strong record of scholarship and funded research, with at least 5 years of experience as an effective instructor, student mentor, and researcher by the beginning date of employment. 

The Department offers degrees at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral level with programs in exercise science, athletic training, and physical therapy. The PhD program is currently the top ranked program in the US and among the top ranked in the world. The department currently serves approximately 1100 undergraduates and over 250 graduate students across all programs. The successful applicants will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching and research, as well as supervise graduate students. 

The Department and Arnold School of Public Health have numerous nutrition researchers with a focus on exercise and nutrition, performance nutrition, nutritional supplements, obesity, special populations, disordered eating, and diet and inflammation. This position will be crucial for enhancing the capabilities in these areas as well as helping to establish the planned graduate track in performance nutrition. The Arnold school is also home to the Nutrition Consortium. The Consortium is comprised of more than 40 outstanding interdisciplinary scholars that are engaged in meaningful research and transformational activities in the field of nutrition. The Consortium provides a wide range of supportive services to Affiliated Scholars, including networking opportunities through the seminar series and annual symposium.

Faculty members in the Department have established relationships with University Athletics, PRISMA Health, the Columbia VA Medical Center, US Special Operations Command, and numerous community partners and schools. The Department, School, and University also have excellent facilities to conduct everything from basic science and molecular work, to applied interventions. Faculty members in the Department have access to well-equipped wet labs, food preparation space, a Clinical Exercise Research Center, and the state-of-the art Sport Science Lab.
