What you will do:

The Assistant Director, Project Management Office for Cornell Information Technologies (CIT) is responsible for leading various institutional response projects that will vary in size and levels of high complexity. They will generally be focused on leading technology projects and initiatives that are: urgent, high institutional impact, vague in scope, and at times lack clarity around stakeholder participation across the university and budget availability. They will be tasked with quickly finding ways to pull cross-university stakeholders together and lead them toward common goals and deliverables. It's essential that the person in this position is able to be flexible with project management approaches so they are able to adapt to the situation in the moment. They will need to be able to "see through the weeds" to find ways to quickly move the university priority forward. Ability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships will be essential to this position.

The person in this position will be accountable for the overall management of assigned institutional response projects including ensuring successful fulfillment of institutional goals, customer expectations, and bringing the projects in on time and within budget. The person in this position will be a direct back-up for the Project Management Office (PMO) Director.

At a minimum, as needed, providing back-up will include:

  • Leading and overseeing PMO staff and staff meetings

  • Assisting in monitoring the full PMO dashboard, raising awareness when escalations are needed

  • Leading PMO Director's projects when Director is away and serving as a mentor to Project Managers

  • Assisting Project Managers on projects in a red status, consulting on strategies to bring the project back to a green state

  • Monitoring project request intake queue and leading Project Manager assignments in consultation with Director

The person in this position will also be directly involved in setting consistent project management baseline processes across the team. Helping lead the standardization of tools, methods, templates and practices across the PMO.

You will be a people person and experienced leader who is passionate about technology and solving complex problems with a strong customer service focus. One who identifies opportunities in challenges and shows initiative. A problem-solving attitude with an ability to motivate your team to achieve specific goals are essential skills to perform well in this position. Additionally, you will have:

Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 7- 10 years' full time relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience with a wide variety of acceptable fields; work experience and knowledge about information technology projects is required; a broad background in business management concepts is required.

  • Minimum 7 years of managing information technology projects. Must have proven experience leading institutional response level projects.

  • Experience utilizing a structured project management methodology and formal tools/approaches, including agile, is required. Proven experience in modifying project management methodologies when needed to meet changing project demands.

  • Experience with standard computer productivity tools, and with project management tools is required.

  • This position requires excellent leadership, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills. These include facilitation, conflict management, change management, negotiation, and team-building. Qualified candidates will need to have demonstrated consensus building and relationship management skills to navigate Cornell's decentralized, consensus-based culture. Strong analytical and problem solving skills and experience in budgeting and estimating are required.

  • Proven record of establishing credibility rapidly to enable them to effectively establish critical relationships with Directors, Managers, and Project Team Members from various parts of the organization.

  • Proven experience proactively leading and managing large cross functional teams.

  • Proven experience working in a fast paced, deadline driven, complex, and rapidly changing environment.

If you have all those things, great! We have a few more things that we would prefer you to have, but it's ok if you don't.

  • Coursework and certification in project management methodology is preferred including a familiarity with the Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK).

  • Experience utilizing a structured software system lifecycle implementation methodology is preferred.

  • Experience managing software development or software as a service (SaaS) implementation projects is preferred.

  • Preference will be given to those candidates with experience working in a higher education and a central computing organization.

Hybrid Remote

This position is located in Ithaca, New York. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the University's decision to limit the number of on-campus employees, the successful applicant will be asked to perform this role remotely at a location in the United States for a limited time, only until the University can permit more employees to work on campus. Once the University permits more employees to work on campus, the successful applicant will be expected to work on the Ithaca campus, although they may be permitted perform a portion of their work remotely.

The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside New York State.
