Description of Work Unit

Colorado State University's Grounds Department provides landscaping services, care, design, renovation, repair and maintenance of all grounds, trees, sports turf, irrigation systems, flower beds, and shrubs throughout the main CSU campus, South Campus, and Foothills Campus.

Position Summary

The Horticulture Technician performs horticulture and landscape design, installation, and maintenance to the University's annual and perennial flower beds. Duties also include proper maintenance of plant material and providing a safe and clean environment in assigned areas.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Two years of progressively responsible grounds care, installation, and maintenance which must have included annual and perennial flower bed design and ornamental landscapes.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

The highly desired candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, personal characteristics, and experience directly related and critical to this position:
  • Background in landscape design.
  • Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Landscape Design, or related.
  • Experience using AutoCAD, InDesign, Photoshop, or similar design programs.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising/leading a grounds crew.
  • Demonstrated verbal communication and interpersonal skills to maintain a work environment where teamwork and customer service can thrive.
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Experience working with a wide variety of grounds maintenance equipment (mowers, trimmers, tractors, blowers, plows, shovels, etc.)
Job Duty Category: Ornamental Landscape

Duty/Responsibility
  • Plan and design annual and perennial ornamental beds.
  • Select and order plants and materials.
  • Prepare, plant, maintain, renovate, and harvest annual and perennial flower beds and ornamental landscapes.

Job Duty Category: Herbicide/Insecticide

Duty/Responsibility
  • Identify disease, insect infestation, and the need for pruning or thinning of plant material.
  • Recommend and carry out remedies to include mixing and applying herbicide/insecticide.
  • Ensure proper pruning or removal of plant material.
  • Identify problem areas in landscape design or past practices and recommends design changes or proper steps to rejuvenate.
Percentage Of Time: 10%

Job Duty Category: Landscape Maintenance

Duty/Responsibility
  • Perform landscape maintenance of turf grass, shrubs, trees, and other plant material and beds including hand mowing, string trimming, shrub pruning, planting bed maintenance, mixing, and applying herbicides.
  • Perform landscape cleanup including litter removal, hard surface cleaning, leaf raking, and removal.

  • Plan, coordinate and assign work activities for all subordinate employees.
  • Establish work standards, monitor progress, timeliness, and accuracy of work product, and report to supervisor.

  • Ensures compliance with Facilities Management policies and procedures including use of personal protective equipment and safe operation of Ground equipment for all subordinate employees.

  • Perform snow removal with broom tractors, truck-mounted snow plows, snowblowers, and hand shoveling.
