Position HighlightsThe University of Arizona Research Technologies Department seeks an enthusiastic professional to join the High Performance Computing (HPC) consulting team. As a Computing Sciences Researcher, the successful candidate will work with faculty, postdocs, graduate students, and research staff to understand their research and facilitate access to computing resources that might best support them. The team collaborates with UArizona researchers across all schools, disciplines, and professional levels. The successful candidate is not required to have all knowledge and skills, but rather a willingness to grow and develop in collaboration with researchers and team members, and generally have a service-oriented mindset.

The Research Technologies Department, reporting into the University Information Technology Services (UITS), provides research computing and data technologies along with expert consulting services to the UArizona research community. We maintain 3 centrally supported supercomputers (Puma, Ocelote and ElGato) comprising over 800 compute nodes and supporting 2PB of data, and support researchers by providing world-class infrastructure in support of their data analysis, and high-quality support and consulting for high performance computing, statistical analysis, and data visualization.
Duties & Responsibilities
The primary responsibility is to consult with
researchers as detailed in the first example below. There is considerable leeway for the
successful candidate to undertake other tasks to be productive and supportive
of the mission.
- Helps campus researchers leverage computing
and data resources by meeting with faculty, students, and staff to understand
aspects of their research that rely on, or could be aided by, data or
computational methodologies, and helping them gain access to the HPC resources. These meetings are held by phone, zoom, or
email through the ticketing system.
- Works with the research community to scale
or optimize software/code for running on the HPC resources. For example:
leveraging parallel computing technologies such as MPI, optimizing scheduler
job requests, improving portability of analyses using container technologies
such as Docker or Singularity.
- Attends or teaches at campus events, such as
Women's Hackathon, Research Bazaar Arizona, Intro to HPC workshops, to consult
with or train researchers.

resources supported by agencies like the NSF and NASA.
- Additional duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in any discipline requiring the use of advanced levels of computational methods and resources and three years of applied research including related practical research computing experience; OR,
- Any equivalent combination of experience, training or education.

- Ability to work in a team environment to support research across disciplines with a service-oriented mindset.
- Strong interpersonal skills in working with both technical and non-technical personnel at different levels in the organization.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic, interdisciplinary team.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge of current and emerging research-related technologies.
- Knowledge of Linux operating systems.
- Familiarity with batch schedulers.
- Familiarity with common scientific tools like Python, Matlab or R.
- Commitment to the culture of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility at UArizona.
- Ability to work in a remote environment since most of our consultation is conducted through zoom and email.
* Experience as a researcher in a compute- and/or data-intensive research area at the graduate level or above.
* Experience with a compiled programming language such as C or Fortran.
* Experience or interest in any of the following areas: high performance computing, cloud computing, research data, sensitive data or containers.
* Familiarity with large datasets, transferring data to and from remote resources, and/or datasets with security compliance (ITAR, HIPAA, etc).
* Contributions to or attendance at a data science/Software Carpentry bootcamp, Women in Data Science event, Research Bazaar, or other computation-focused and/or data-focused training efforts.
