Reed College seeks an experienced advisor to be our next Career and Fellowships Advisor. The Career and Fellowships Advisor joins the staff of the Center for Life Beyond Reed (CLBR) to help students develop purposefully and professionally from their first year through graduation and beyond. The advisor role is focused in three areas: 1) Excellence in advising: career, grad school, and fellowships advising in assigned fields; 2) Strategic program management: strategic planning, implementation, and measurement of assigned programs; 3) Alignment with academics: collaboration with assigned academic departments and faculty. This role embodies the Communities of Purpose: a holistic and integrated advising model that encourages students to begin their college tenure by self-identifying areas they feel purposeful about exploring while in college. This position reports to the Director of the Center for Life Beyond Reed. 

Reed College offers an exceptional benefits package, including comprehensive medical and dental insurance, 403(b) retirement plan with 10% employer contribution (after one year of service), educational assistance for employees and their children, 22 days of paid vacation, paid holidays, half-day Fridays in the summer, and many other campus amenities. This is a full-time, exempt role with work hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a one hour unpaid lunch. As with most advising roles, some evening and weekend hours will be required. Community is essential to a Reed education, so staff perform their work on campus. This is not a remote role. The salary for this position is $58,000 per year.

  • You have three years of direct advising experience with students and/or adults 
  • You are knowledgeable over a broad range of complex and challenging application cycles including graduate school, pre-med, healthcare, science, tech fields, fellowships, and career opportunities

  • You are creative, flexible, and comfortable working in a “startup” like environment where collaboration and workshopping ideas is the rule
  • You are comfortable dealing with ambiguity
  • You are able to act with autonomy
  • You are someone who fosters trust among team members
  • You are an experienced presenter and strong communicator who can inform, persuade, and motivate a wide variety of audiences such as students, faculty, alumni, staff, prospective students and families, and community business partners
  • You are an effective collaborator who provides clear direction to professional and student staff when planning/leading programs or events
  • You are committed to the value of a liberal arts education
  • You have experience engaging effectively with faculty 
  • You have personal experience or advising experience in STEM fields or closely related fields
What You’ll Do 
  • Be a trusted, relevant, data-informed advisor to the Reed students and recent grads
    • Outreach to alumni, other professionals, grad and professional schools to better understand specific work and grad school application process and timeline
    • Attend alumni and employer events programmed by CLBR’s Strategic Partnership Director to expand knowledge of field and opportunities
    • Connect students with alumni to increase their successful exploration in their communities of purpose
  • Program Management
    • Plan, design, and implement of pre-med and other assigned programs whose outcomes can be accurately measured and evaluated
    • Supervise student staff, meet with student groups
    • Plan and manage budget for your areas of responsibility
  • Faculty Engagement
    • Develop a plan with each assigned academic department for programming needed by specific field of study
    • Communicate with faculty advisers in assigned departments about students and recent grads, as needed
