Laboratory Research Aide
This position will assist the Entomology program at the Hampton Roads Agricultural Research and Extension Center (AREC) in the implementation and maintenance of laboratory, greenhouse and field experiments affecting nursery production, and specialty crops during the upcoming growing seasons. The successful candidate will assist the Entomology Principal Investigator with planting, fertilizing, mowing, data and sample collection in the field and greenhouse, and assisting with experiments in the laboratory. This is an off-campus position at the Hampton Roads AREC, located in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Ability to work in outdoor situations, regardless of weather. Able to work independently and under supervision. Be able to assist in all phases of field, greenhouse and laboratory work and learn to develop skills as a field scouter, identifying and recording insect pests and beneficial insect densities in crops of interest.
Ability to count insect densities. Be able to identify insect pests and beneficials after training and count pest and beneficial insect densities from collected field samples in a timely manner, and as directed. Assist with data compilation and entry into a computer using basic computer skills, including the ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint programs. Collect data and take notes during field work, and during counting of insects from field-collected samples. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and exercise basic quality control procedures.
Experience in agricultural research settings, experience with data collection, entering and analysis. Basic knowledge in Entomology and good laboratory practices.
