Job Description

Responsible for the timely, effective, and efficient financial functions of the Biological Systems Engineering Department and advising the Department Head on financial status, practices and policies. Independently accomplishes or supervises fund disbursement transactions; performs budget allocation and reconciliation functions for operating, start-up, salary, and overhead accounts; proactively communicates potential issues with Sponsored Programs accounts to faculty members and acts as liaison as appropriate; approves HokieMart fund transactions; manages and oversees purchasing credit card (P-Card) purchases and the travel expense system (Chrome River); ensures Department compliance with University, State and Federal guidelines regarding financial matters; manages and processes graduate teaching assistantships (GTAs) and graduate research assistantships (GRAs); provides fiscal policy guidance to faculty, staff and students as needed; performs financial reporting and analysis responsibilities; manages two cost center accounts and supervises one staff employee.

Required Qualifications

BS Degree or equivalent applicable experience and training; significant experience and knowledge of advanced financial principles and practices; experience in the preparation of financial and budgetary reports; demonstrated experience in MS Excel or MS Access and MS Word, and ability to learn other software as needed; demonstrated ability to independently supervise several aspects of departmental operations; demonstrated organizational and interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with a diverse clientele base.

Preferred Qualifications

Budget management experience, working knowledge of University financial policies and procedures; experience in Virginia Tech financial applications such as Banner, HokieMart, Chrome River and Summit, or similar financial/accounting systems.
