Job Summary

The Becker Friedman Institute for Economics (BFI) is seeking to hire a Program Manager to help lead its Pre-doctoral Research Professionals Program for the BFI Initiatives and EPIC. In coordination with BFI leadership, the Program Manager will lead the program, which includes BFI’s Initiatives and EPIC, in several key functions, including recruitment and onboarding strategy, professional development, community building, events and programming as needed, and off-boarding.

The Program Manager will be primarily responsible for the operational success of the Pre-doctoral Research Professionals Program, working with BFI leadership as appropriate to ensure seamless management, program delivery, and evaluation. This role with report indirectly to BFI Executive Director and report directly to BFI People Operations Manager. In this role, the Program Manager will lead a growing staff of research professionals.

  • Evaluates and leads program curriculum and policies; manages programmatic budget and ensures fiscal responsibility in close partnership with BFI and EPIC finance personnel; and implements training modules.
  • Leads program outreach strategy; and creates marketing and recruiting materials in collaboration with BFI and EPIC Communications teams to increase awareness of the programs internally at the University of Chicago and externally at top tier institutions.
  • Implements onboarding and orientation for research professionals in close partnership with the BFI HR Manager; and independently plans, oversees, and coordinates a wide range of programs, events, and student activities to help build and maintain a community for the program.
  • Recruits, hires, and provides training and orientation for the program in close cooperation with the BFI HR Manager; advisea research professionals on how to navigate the program and work closely with their faculty supervisors; maintains strong relationships with EPIC and BFI faculty for successful program delivery; ensures smooth and proper functioning of programs; leads and implements programming; and implements protocols for evaluating the effectiveness of programs.
  • Uses moderate/solid understanding and experience to administer the delivery of services to program participants and/or beneficiaries.
  • Sets and communicates program priorities and performance standards and assesses operations using these criteria. Plans and conducts quality assurance reviews and recommends changes as appropriate.
  • Has moderate/high levels of interactions with faculty, researchers and staff for committee work or information.
  • Performs other related work as needed.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.
Technical Skills or Knowledge:
  • Familiarity with pre-doctoral research professionals training programs at highly-selective, top-tier institutions.
  • Prior experience as building and running a program.
  • Work effectively with team members, staff and faculty across the University of Chicago, from faculty at the Chicago Booth School of Business, Harris School of Public Policy, Law School, and the Department of Economics, to other internal and external University of Chicago partners.
  • Understanding of higher education and/or nonprofit organizations.
