The Office of the Bursar is Cornell University's central billing service center for tuition, fees, and other charges incurred by students, and proactively assists families to manage their financial obligations to the university by offering exceptional customer service and a variety of financial services, including the CornellCard program (a service that allows students to make purchases by presenting their Cornell ID cards) and installment payment plans. The Bursar Office also bills for and collects payment for student loans, university receivables, and delinquent Bursar and CornellCard accounts. What you will be doing:

As a team member in Cornell University's Office of the Bursar, the Bursar Account Services Representative will perform and coordinate all activities related to the Bursar Account Services area including Bursar, CornellCard, Full Service Payment Plan (FSPP installment plan) accounts. Providing prompt and courteous customer service to students and others seeking assistance and guidance on student financial accounts is a primary responsibility. Customer service will be provided via email, in person, virtually, by phone or in writing. This requires clearly understanding university policies and procedures, both financial and academic (where pertinent to the functions of the Office of the Bursar) in order to provide information to students, as well as being in contact with appropriate University departments for up-to-date information.

This position will provide extensive customer service, work with third party vendors, process vouchers and journal entries, and apply appropriate cash management procedures when processing and balancing student payments. This work will be done by utilizing knowledge of the integrated student system, PeopleSoft, and web based applications in responding to inquiries, releasing bursar holds on accounts and registering students for the semester.

This position will coordinate with representatives from Financial Aid and Student Employment, Office of the Registrar, and other campus departments regarding student account charges and credit details. This requires analyzing accounts and conducting other research as necessary to respond to inquiries and resolve discrepancies; identifying problems or errors in accounts; and determining appropriate corrective actions within established guidelines and refer for action as appropriate. The person in this role will utilize knowledge of PeopleSoft, CASHNet, NelNet, Flywire and Tuition Pay systems to assist students and parents with financial services such as, FSPP Payment plan, Refunds, 1098T presentation, electronic billing and online payment presentation issues. Reconciliation duties and other job responsibilities will be assigned as needed.

Hybrid Remote

This position is located in Ithaca, New York. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the University's decision to limit the number of on-campus employees, the successful applicant will be asked to perform this role remotely at a location in the United States for a limited time, only until the University can permit more employees to work on campus. Once the University permits more employees to work on campus, the successful applicant will be expected to work on the Ithaca campus, although they may intermittently be allowed to conduct their work remotely. The final determination will be made based on the needs of the department and on Cornell's university wide status.

The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside New York State.

What are the required qualifications?

Associate's degree with at least 2 - 4 years of relevant financial experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. We also look for the following experiences and abilities:

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and follow up skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and maintain positive customer service-orientation in a complex, deadline driven, and active environment with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a broad range of individuals and organizations.
  • Accuracy, attention to detail, analytical, time management, and problem-solving skills critical.
  • Effectively organize, plan, and prioritize multiple competing work activities under pressure.
  • Exercise sound judgment and decision making in accomplishing a high volume of transactions and communications that are urgent or of a sensitive or confidential nature.
  • Cash management skills and experience, as well as familiarity with financial transactions and accounting.

In addition to these requirements, we would value someone with a Bachelor's degree preferably in business administration or accounting and previous experience in a university setting.
