Job Description Summary: The Executive Director, Marketing & Communications is a new position created to provide strategic marketing and communications leadership to the Owens’ community. Leading the Office of Marketing & Communications, the Executive Director designs, coordinates, executes, and evaluates the effectiveness of college-wide marketing campaigns and programs. This position is a strategic partner to Enrollment and many departments within the college, supporting them in the areas of strategic marketing, digital strategy, social media, visual creative and print services, communications and content strategy, and the owens.edu website. The Executive Director will have experience in oversight of each of these core areas.

Reporting to the Vice President for Enrollment Management & Student Services, the Executive Director advises and assists the VP, president, senior leadership, and departmental leadership in establishing and connecting marketing and communications-related activities to college-wide goals and initiatives, developing suitable strategies and tactics, and executing upon a clearly developed marketing plan. The Executive Director supervises a department of nine people.

The ideal candidate will possess significant higher education or related marketing experience and demonstrate strong leadership working with many diverse constituencies. We are seeking a strategic thinker focused on high-level efforts to modernize and drive the college’s marketing and communications, leveraging Owens’ key strengths into a unified strategy. The Executive Director will be a strong, visionary, transformational leader and will play a critical role in achieving enrollment growth and credibility among leadership and departments. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 
  • Demonstrates knowledge of strategic marketing and communication best practices, including key tools to support marketing and communication initiatives such as a project management system, CRM, analytics dashboards, social media platforms, media monitoring tools, etc.
  • Understanding of email marketing communications and drip campaigns, paid digital marketing campaigns, search engine optimization, website strategy and accessibility, and social media management.
  • Analyzes and interprets information, conditions, stakeholder positions and other variables in order to develop a framework for communications and marketing; adjusts the strategy in response to or in anticipation of changing conditions. 
  •   Knowledge of the higher education enrollment recruitment cycle and marketing impacts and touch points throughout the prospective student journey
  •   Strong account management, marketing and communication strategy, digital marketing, and supervisory skills
  • Ability to handle stressful situations with professionalism and composure

Essential Functions: 
  • The Executive Director is responsible for creating and implementing an annual strategic marketing plan in support of Owens’ strategic plan to advance the college’s brand identity; broaden awareness of its programs and priorities; and increase the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences. The plan will adhere to and be measured by clearly defined objectives; amplify the college’s standing across all digital mediums; and deliver messages that advance Owens’ mission and vision. 
  • Develop and oversee the execution of a comprehensive and strategic marketing and communications plan in support of recruitment initiatives that are both proactive and responsive to market forces and institutional priorities, and is rooted in data.
  • Lead and supervise the staff in the Office of Marketing & Communications, including hiring and motivating staff, developing appropriate team building and training activities, and prioritizing work activities.
  • Lead issues, crisis/issue and overall reputation management for Owens. 
Minimum Qualifications/Education:
  • Bachelors degree required with an advanced degree preferred. 
  • 7-10 years experience in marketing and/or communications.
  • Past training in Marketing, Communications, Education, or related field
