Position Overview
The Director of Facilities is responsible for stewarding the physical plant and land resources in accordance with Breck’s strategic initiatives/priorities, Comprehensive Site Plan, and the long-term financial plan. The Director of Facilities maintains oversight over the physical plant of three distinct locations: the main campus, Anderson Ice Arena and the bus garage. Other key areas of responsibility include energy management, development of sustainability plans, and overseeing all construction and capital improvement projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Hire, supervise and develop all buildings, grounds, custodial, and maintenance (collectively “buildings and grounds”) personnel
  • Schedule, monitor, build and maintain relationships with contractors
  • Ensure regular maintenance and upkeep of all school facilities as well as school-owned properties and vehicles via the supervision of staff and contractors
  • Manage all buildings and grounds contracts, including those related to capital improvement/major construction projects
  • Adept at sourcing vendors from a diversity/equity/inclusion perspective
  • Oversee all budgets related to physical plant, including those for facilities/grounds maintenance, utilities, security, transportation, and capital improvements
  • Create and oversee an on-going equipment replacement program
  • Lead compliance efforts regarding local, state, and federal regulations
  • Manage facilities-related logistics for campus events and rentals
  • Coordinate activities with the Director of Security to minimize health, safety or security issues
  • Create and maintain facilities and grounds related policies and procedures as well as ensure appropriate compliance by both Breck staff and contractors
  • Serve as the main point of contact for facilities-related concerns
  • Supports C.O.O.’s role as staff support to the Building and Grounds Committee of the Board of Trustees
  • Perform other duties assigned
Education and/or Experience
Minimum of bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, such as engineering or facility management preferred; or an equivalent combination of progressively responsible experience and training

Minimum of five to ten years progressively responsible experience managing facilities in a school or similar campus environment

The following certifications are required:
  • CPR and First Aid
  • State of MN boilers license – Chief C
The following trainings and certifications are preferred:
  • Asbestos
  • Certified Facility Manager (IFMA) or Facility Management Professional (IFMA)
  • Certified Energy Manager (AEE)
Demonstrated record of successfully working with internal and external service providers to achieve timely, efficient, high-quality maintenance, repair, renovation, and construction work

Experience and success working with architects, legal counsel, zoning, and other regulatory officials, engineers, construction firms, and project managers

Strong administrative/leadership experience, ideally in managing contractors and buildings and grounds personnel

Valid Minnesota driver’s license

  • Understanding of facilities systems, such as mechanical, electrical, and HVAC
  • Knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and terminology of facilities trades, such as carpentry, masonry, grounds/landscaping, and housekeeping
  • Adept at personnel management and complex projects, but also willing/able to lead by example and to perform routine maintenance tasks and use basic equipment, machinery, tools, and materials as needed. Builds strong relationships with team members.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies and a diverse, multilingual workforce, with ability to communicate in Spanish preferred
  • Computer proficiency to include use of email, CAD/CAM, and computerized facilities management systems; Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word and Excel, preferred.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including work developing, managing, and projecting capital and operating budgets

  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs on a routine basis
  • Climb ladders to 12 feet
  • Bending stooping, reaching, grabbing, and crawling in confined places
