The International Student and Scholar Services Specialist position will be responsible for all activities in support of providing seamless and exceptional service to the university’s international student population. As the university grows its international student population, provides support and oversight for all SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) compliance functions and serves as the Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) and Responsible Officer (ARO). Delivers comprehensive range of international student advising functions and makes referrals to relevant campus support as required. Implement social and cultural events, and support key enrollment initiatives related to international students. The incumbent also administers the student health insurance requirement and supports student related compliance and regulatory work for Student Affairs.
Outcomes and Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a Principal Designated School Official (DSO) for the university’s F-1 student program, and as Responsible Officer (ARO) for the university’s J-1 student Exchange Visitor Program and perform related interface with the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) for the issuance of Form I-20s and DS-2019s. 
  • Advise and assist international students regarding obtaining and maintaining legal status and immigration benefits, such as Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT), and Academic Training. 
  • Interpret complex U.S. immigration regulations and policies/procedures concerning F/J immigration benefits. 
  • Administer, and ensure compliance with, student health insurance program for students required by the institution to have current insurance coverage. 
  • Contribute to the development and content for the website devoted to ISSS and deliver targeted communication and announcements to international student population. Organize the planning and delivery of orientation for new international students. Assist with marketing and outreach efforts to grow international enrollment. 
  • Implement communication and outreach plan that includes, but is not limited to, developing social media program, monthly International Student via newsletter with timely updates and engagement opportunities, and Town Halls each term. 
  • Create and organize activities and programs for international students to promote rapid integration into the university, peer and social networking opportunities. Coordinate and implement programs including, but not limited to, International Fair, International Education Week (I.E.W.), International Women’s Day, and off-campus excursions. 
  • Identify student issues and work to resolve by effectively using EAB in coordination with Advising staff. Work on assigned committees, teams and advise student groups/clubs within the organization. Nurture and grow Global Exchange Student Organization. Establish and grow Phi Beta Delta Honor Society for International Scholars. 
  • Attend key events to represent the university and when possible, create opportunities to obtain Enrollment leads. Develop strategy for implementation of Student Abroad programs in partnership with local institutions and/or with partners such as Global Brigades. 
  • Support student services, marketing and admissions in creating increased visibility for the international program. Submit all required reports for SEVIS (F-10 and Student Exchange programs (J-1) in collaborate with the PDSO & RO. 
Competencies, Skills and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree Preferred
  • 3-5 years of experience in enrollment/admissions/sales/international student services
  • Working Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Strong management and customer service skills
  • Study or work abroad experience preferred
  • Language skills are a plus
  • SEVIS experience and F-1, J-1 advising experience preferred
  • Strong ability to achieve results in established timelines. Understands and demonstrates that intentions, activities and results are not the same. Expects that obstacles will occur and refuses to use them as an excuse for not achieving results.
  • Understands the internal climates of the organization as a whole and uses the appropriate communication channels to achieve goals and objectives.
  • Manages each stage of a project to ensure that commitments are met in a manner that is timely and within budget.
  • Expresses genuine confidence that students can (and will) be successful as learners. Is fully engaged as a teacher, and demonstrates enthusiasm about the subject at hand. Encourages active participation, including questions from students, making it clear that everyone is in a safe place to give an incorrect answer, or to ask a question that may reveal a lack of current mastery of facts or concepts.
