Position Summary

The Department of Social Work at Austin Peay State University (APSU) is recruiting applicants to fill the position of Assistant Professor in Fall 2022. The Social Work Department fosters faculty/student mentoring to encourage students' involvement in research and service projects in the surrounding communities. The University's orientation to student success and our small classroom environment enhances the faculty's ability to mentor and build relationships with students. The faculty and student body of the social work department at Austin Peay is racially/ethnically diverse and dynamic. We have eight full time faculty that serve approximately 200 undergraduate social work majors in our BSW program and 50 graduate students in our advanced generalist MSW program.  Our faculty and students are involved in the community through our many committees and student organizations, and have been involved in many projects that support the APSU campus and the surrounding community. Our campus represents the diversity of the local community and the state and we believe that all are enriched and unified by this diversity. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from a broad spectrum of qualified people with the commitment and ability to work with a diverse student population.  

Austin Peay State University is conveniently located near downtown Clarksville, Tennessee, which is in a centralized location surrounded by suburban and rural communities. The Clarksville/Montgomery County area has undergone unprecedented growth in the past 10 years as a destination community for individuals and families, attracting people from all across the nation. Clarksville is only a 45-minute drive to a major metropolitan area; Nashville is the capitol of Tennessee and state's largest city, containing an international airport and a booming tourist industry. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Faculty candidates will teach in the undergraduate program and/or in the MSW program. 
  • Both are generalist social work programs, and there is an opportunity to teach or develop a variety of courses.  
  • Faculty members are also expected to conduct scholarship and research activities, participate in student advising, and in university and community service.
  • We are especially interested in candidates who have particular background and knowledge of trauma the treatment of trauma.  
  • We are especially interested in candidates who have had military experience or affiliation, or who have a strong interest in research pertaining to military life. 
  • A multi-disciplinary Center for the Study of Military Life developed by the College of Behavioral and Health Sciences provides an opportunity to study all aspects of military life as they impact the service member, the military family and community, and the nation. 
  • The social work department is an integral part of that endeavor in the areas of research, course development and continuing education for practitioners. 
  • With Austin Peay's proximity to the military installation at Fort Campbell and the growth of the social work department, candidates should have the ability to work with a diverse student and faculty population and adapt to change. 
  • Faculty will teach traditional and non-traditional students, online and on campus week days or evenings (MSW Program). 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Candidate should have knowledge consistent with a social work education, social work competencies, pedagogical methodologies that connect with students, and knowledge of cutting- edge theory regarding relevant social work topics.
  • Candidate should have skills necessary to administer and facilitate both online and on-ground assigned classes. 
  • Candidate should be teachable, agile, and flexible as educational and pedagogical trends morph with changing times. 
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • MSW from a CSWE-accredited program, and 
  • Ph.D. or doctorate in social work or related field. 
  • ABD will be considered if all requirements are completed by date of hire (August 1, 2022). 
  • A minimum of two years of post-MSW practice experience is required. 
  • A background search will be required of the successful candidate.
