Job Description

The History Department at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications for a full time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of History of Medicine beginning in Fall 2022. The area of specialization is open, but the department will prioritize applicants whose teaching and research explore US and global health disparities across axes of race, ethnicity, gender, class, and region. The applicant should demonstrate active scholarship in the field and a record of teaching effectiveness and mentoring undergraduate students. The faculty member will teach specialized upper-level undergraduate and/or master's level courses as well as survey courses in our Core curriculum. Candidates must have a PhD in hand at the time of appointment and show a commitment to research, teaching, and service.

UAB's Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences is the largest biomedical library in Alabama and serves as a Resource Library for the Southeast/Atlantic Region in the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. The collections of the library span seven centuries of knowledge, from medieval manuscripts to the most current electronic journals in the various health science disciplines. Also located in Lister Hill are the University Archives, which contains archival records and photographs of UAB and health care communities of the surrounding area; the Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences, which holds and exhibits instruments, equipment, specimens and models; and the Reynolds-Finley Historical Library, a growing collection of over 20,000 rare books, manuscripts, journals, and pamphlets pertaining to the history of medicine, science, and health care, dating from the 1300s through the mid-1900s.
