Job Description:

BWell holistically supports the health and wellbeing of all Brown University students through individual and community level engagement that is evidence informed, rooted in social justice and recognizes the social determinants of health. Our work empowers students through knowledge and skill building to promote lifelong wellness and community care. The BWell Associate Director for Response Services serves as a core member of the department’s management staff and oversees all BWell sexual and relationship violence response initiatives inclusive of SHARE Advocacy services, the Sexual Assault Response Line and alcohol and other drug high-risk event follow-up. The Associate Director provides support to students and advocates for improved systems and responses based on a power, privilege and oppression model. The Associate Director also has responsibilities that support the mission of BWell Health Promotion including: spearheading special projects, supervising staff and student employees, managing budgets, consulting student groups and programs, marketing, outreach, assessment, coordinating training for students, faculty and staff, and serving in the absence of the Director.

Major Responsibilities include the following:

Provide leadership and oversight of creation, implementation and evaluation for BWell’s interpersonal violence response services. (50%)
  • Directly manages operational procedures of the Sexual Assault Response Line and advocacy based counseling services.
  • Hires, trains, supervises, and assesses two full-time licensed professional staff members: the SHARE Advocates.
  • Collaborates to implement and analyze population and community needs assessments and evaluation surveys to inform response services.
  • Collaborates with key constituents to develop and coordinate a comprehensive strategic response plan being inclusive of traditionally underserved and/or higher-risk populations.
  • Collaborates with key constituents to develop and coordinate improved systems and responses related to interpersonal violence including case review within Health and Wellness Services and review of coordinated services within the Division of Campus Life.
  • Collaborates with community agencies and other colleges and universities.
  • Performs administrative duties under departmental leadership such as report writing, budget administration of allocated funds, evaluation and assessment, and other related activities.
  • Represents BWell Health Promotion on various ad-hoc committees and standing meetings.
  • Leads departmental meetings, events, initiatives, and programs as needed.

Provide leadership and oversight of creation, implementation and evaluation for BWell’s high-risk behavior response services. (25%)

  • Coordinates substance use assessment and intervention (both individual and group) for students experiencing the associated harms of substance use and abuse.
  • Oversee the post-intoxication tracking and appointment system to ensure all students receive appropriate and timely follow up care and systems improvements are regularly made as needed.
  • Actively creates and enhances response services that meet the needs of an increasingly diverse campus population and will augment students' educational experience
  • Serves as a liaison to community substance abuse agencies.

Provide support to any student from the University (undergraduate, graduate, and medical) who experiences harm or consequence due to high-risk behavior and those affected by: sexual assault, sexual and/or gender-based harassment, domestic/dating violence, relational abuse or stalking. (25%)

  • Provides support in the form of advocacy based counseling to students affected by interpersonal violence, including secondary victims and those who choose to file a complaint through Title IX and Gender Equity.
  • Serves students of multiply diverse identities through developmentally appropriate approaches.
  • Participates in the crisis support system including daytime management of the Sexual Assault Response Line.
  • Evening/overnight and weekend on call duties of one week and one weekend a month for the Sexual Assault Response Line.
  • Coordinates support and services with the Department of Public Safety (DPS) for students who choose to go through the criminal justice system and students who have interacted with DPS.
  • Conduct follow-up appointments with students who have been treated by EMS for acute intoxication or who have been referred by campus colleagues. Using evidence-based practices of motivational interviewing and stages of change (ie BASICS) appointments will focus on harnessing the student’s intrinsic motivation and ability to contemplate, prepare, act on and maintain a change plan for a variety of self-care and harm reducing behaviors.
  • Refer students appropriately to medical providers, psychotherapists, BWell staff or other University services.


  • Master’s or Doctorate Degree in relevant field and independently licensed mental health provider or equivalent required. Must be independently licensed in Rhode Island or hold one of these licenses in another state and be eligible for independent licensure in RI.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the dynamics of interpersonal violence and the ability to provide support to survivors of interpersonal violence.
  • Expertise in addressing substance use and abuse through individual interventions with college age students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and understanding of the social determinants of health.
  • Commitment to diversity and demonstrated cultural competence in serving the needs of a diverse student population.
  • Ability to work effectively as both a team member and leader, with exceptional interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated project management skills such as ability to organize, take initiative, and operate independently with minimal direction.
  • Experience with process improvement concepts and projects.
  • Exceptional presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster positive and productive relationships with all campus constituencies, including students, institutional leaders, faculty, staff, and alumni/ae.
  • Sound judgment, initiative and discretion particularly in terms of maintaining confidentiality in complex, sensitive situations.
  • Outstanding proficiency in teamwork, inclusivity, collaboration, flexibility and organizational problem-solving.
  • Solid foundation in student developmental theory, public health and behavior change theory, logic models and their application to professional practice in higher education and student affairs.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess program effectiveness.
  • Available to work some nights and/or weekends.
