Western Michigan University seeks a Director of Major Gifts to work with key donors across the entirety of the university in facilitating significant philanthropic support while simultaneously achieving and modeling the highest levels of performance with regards to prescribed performance standards. This key position will work in partnership with Deans, Department Chairs, Faculty, and Advancement Colleagues to enhance collaboration and grow the Major Gifts profile of the University.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Identifies and promotes relationships with major donors with an emphasis on major gifts
  • Identifies potential major gift prospects, including determining the interest and affiliation with the University
  • Builds relationships with donors and coordinates strategies and personal visits for the involvement of institutional partners
  • Writes major gift proposals and agreements

Required education 


Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution. 


Required experience 


  • Five to seven years relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated experience in fundraising, sales/marketing, advertising, public relations, communications or a related field.
  • Willingness to travel on a frequent basis.
  • Individuals should demonstrate professionalism, with strong communication skills and be capable of motivating volunteers as well as donors.
  • The successful candidate will be self-motivated and have the ability to work as a team member in a complex organization. 

Required other 

Ability to work irregular shifts and extended hours, including evenings and weekends. 


Preferred experience 

  • Preference is given to candidates with experience in higher education fundraising.
  • Preference for proven success in building productive, relationships with senior administrators, key business leaders, faculty, staff, institutional boards, volunteers, and/or donors.
