Catawba College (“Catawba”) seeks applicants for its Director of Housing and Residence Life. The selected candidate will guide, advise, and supervise Catawba’s Office of Housing and Residence Life, further Catawba’s Mission through programs developed and implemented by Housing and Residence Life and administer the overall educational and managerial responsibilities within the office. The Director of Housing and Residence Life is responsible for the responsible for effective management of all Catawba residence hall facility operations and supervision of all residence life functions.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Directly supervise and facilitate the recruitment, training, development of Catawba Resident Assistant and two Graduate Area Housing Coordinators
  • Consistent with the Catawba Mission and Student Affairs priorities, create and implement a team development plan including but not limited to individual meetings, weekly staff meetings, and team bonding activities
  • Guide Resident Assistant and Area Housing Coordinators in supporting the departmental mission and vision to cultivate communities focused on sense of belonging, inclusivity, wellbeing, academic success, and engaged citizenship
  • Conduct meetings with individual Resident Assistants and Area Housing Coordinators and provide the framework for weekly staff meetings
  • Assess the needs, interests, and expectations of all staff members through ongoing feedback, development, and job action if needed
  • Develop and lead community-wide programs and activities contributing to the academic and personal development of residents and creating a positive atmosphere for residents and guests
  • Serve as a role model, provide visibility and be available to residents by completing office hours each week; serve as a department liaison to parents and students by mediating disputes and conflicts pertaining to student development as well as department and Catawba policies
  • Assess student development needs and concerns; work in partnership with Student Affairs staff interpret, communicate, and enforce Catawba policies, rules, and regulations
  • Adjudicate residence hall-level conduct incidents timely, including notice and hearing of documented incidents
  • Assist with annual review of the Student Resource Guide and other departmental policies governing student conduct and expectations in the residence halls
  • Ensure compliance with professional and legal standards of due process, risk management, Clery reporting, etc.
  • Work closely with the Chaplain’s Office, Catawba counselors, Catawba Public Safety, and other campus partners to manage the outreach and follow-up for students of concern within a timely manner
  • Coordinate the overall administrative management of Catawba Housing and Residence Life and prepare for administrative processes such as community opening in the Fall and closing at the end of each semester
  • Conduct a monthly walk through of all residence halls to monitor physical condition of the buildings
  • Coordinate with staff members to complete scheduled health and safety inspections of student rooms in the Fall and Spring semesters and at conclusion of the January and Summer terms
  • Manage damage accountability, billing process, and ensure work orders are submitted for health and safety inspections and closing processes
  • Actively oversee, track and reconcile the Housing & Residence Life budget on a monthly basis, including but not limited to programming, professional development, and training budgets
  • Facilitate the check-in and check-out of residents and in maintaining room occupancy and processing room changes
  • Serve on Catawba committees at the direction of the Senior Vice-President for the College Experience
  • Advise student leadership groups, including advisor for the student organization, Residence Hall Association (RHA)
  • Lead Residence Life with fall and mid-year training, Resident Advisor and Area Housing Coordinator selections, staff recognition initiatives, and first-year and upper-class programs
  • Participate in on-call rotation with other Residence Life and Housing staff; work cooperatively with Chaplains Office, Catawba Public Safety, Student Health Services, Catawba counselors, and other campus and community resources to provide assistance during emergency and/or crisis situations
  • Contribute to an effective unit by completing special projects and performing other duties assigned by the Senior Vice-President & Dean of Students
  • On Call & Crisis Management
    • Serve in on-call crisis management rotation for campus.
    • Provide emergency response and crisis management as needed on campus and for staff.
    • Develops a residence hall on-call program with the Resident Assistants to assure 24-hour, seven day coverage in the residence halls
  • Other Duties as Assigned by the President and/or the Senior-Vice President for the College Experience & Dean of Students
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Collaborative individual working with faculty and staff from a variety of Catawba departments
  • Ability to multitask and find creative solutions in a supervisory and autonomous environment
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office programs and learning management systems such as Blackboard. 
  • Understanding of student management systems such as Banner, Presence, eRezLife, and Maxient
  • Strong oral and written communication skills need to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, parents, and administrators
  • Excellent leadership and supervisory skills
  • Familiarity with social media platforms such as Instagram
  • Demonstrate tact, a positive attitude, courtesy and discretion in dealing with trustees, faculty, staff, students, high-level Catawba officials, and the public
  • Work independently as well as function effectively in a team and within a diverse group of people
  • Adaptability, flexibility and a willingness to work in a changing environment
  • Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours
  • This position demands accuracy, honesty, integrity and the ability to work within the Catawba Mission
JOB REQUIREMENTS:

The minimum job requirements for this position are:
  • Master’s degree in higher education, student personnel or related field
  • At least five (5) years’ experience of working in residence life on a college/university campus
  • Experience in developing, implementing and assessing strategic goals, objectives, and outcomes
  • Experience in supervision/administrative role
ABOUT CATAWBA:

Founded in 1851 in Newton, North Carolina, Catawba was started by German pioneers who had traveled from eastern Pennsylvania to settle in the valleys of the Haw, Yadkin, and Catawba Rivers. In 1890, Catawba became a coeducational institution and the first woman graduate completed her studies in 1893. In 1925, Catawba moved and re-opened to its current location in Salisbury, NC, which is about 45 minutes from Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Charlotte, two hours from the mountains, and four hours from the beaches.
