The Department of Psychology in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences is seeking applications for a Senior Academic Advisor. This position conducts professional advising for students in the major and minor undergraduate programs in the Department of Psychology as well as provides high-level administrative support to two graduate program directors in a complex science unit: the Director of Graduate Training and the Director of Clinical Training, including operational, accreditation, recruitment, admissions, and retention needs of our doctoral programs. 

In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will: 

  • Provide academic and career orientation advising to students in the Psychology major and develop plans of study for students to meet major's benchmarks that will lead to graduation and a career of interest to them. Evaluate students on progress toward meeting program benchmarks and contact students failing to meet benchmarks. Assist majors preparing for post baccalaureate transitions, including arranging educational opportunities for career planning. Conduct procedures that are part of the Eberly College Undergraduate Studies Office protocol (i.e., change of major, adding a major or a degree, graduation certification, 90-CR checks, transient forms, etc.).
  • Meet and advise incoming new and transfer students during New Student Orientation (NSO) during the summer. Develop plan of study and matriculation plans.
  • Actively participate on the Advising Committee and Undergraduate Training Committee of the Department of Psychology. Assist with administration of ACAT tests and Capstone Poster Sessions each semester. Actively participate in College advisor training and development and committees pertaining to advising and undergraduate performance.
  • Teach appropriate undergraduate courses as assigned by Chair, including potentially instructing our professional field experience courses.
  • Participate in WVU Recruitment efforts aimed at potential Psychology majors, including programs aimed at transfer students as well as students from diverse backgrounds. 
  • Provide administrative support to the Director of Graduate Training and the Graduate Training Committee. Maintain electronic graduate files for 70-80 current graduate students and application files for all new applicants for the PhD program. Monitor the graduation process to ensure that the graduate students complete all of the requirements to receive their PhD and master's degrees. On an "as needed" basis, advise graduate students regarding registration, graduation, scholarships. Work with the Graduate Training Committee to coordinate annual events such as interview weekend and annual fall welcome picnic. Monitor university graduate application software (TargetX) and provide periodic emails to applicants with incomplete applications. Compile statistics on applicants, offers of admission, and acceptances and handles all admission and rejection notifications. Update Degree-Works pages for changes in student's plans of study.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Graduate Training and Director of Clinical Training in preparing graduate program reviews for WVU's Board of Governors and annual accreditation reports for the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Association for Behavior Analysis International. Distribute surveys to current graduate students and alumni, collect data, and prepare summaries to make sure that data is recorded accurately. 
Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Psychology or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • A minimum of two (2) year of experience:
    • Teaching and/or advising at the college level
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize basic business office software such as the Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability to learn University policies and procedures
  • Ability to function and meet established deadlines
  • Highly self-directed and self-motivated with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated excellent customer service skills
  • Experience in graduate education policy and procedures
  • Ability to learn new University web-based data bases and programs (Banner, SSC, and Degree Works)
