Position Summary

The Athletic Training Program at the University of New Mexico (UNM) invites applications for an Assistant Professor, Tenure-Track faculty position in the Department of Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences starting July 2022.

UNM will be starting its Master of Science in Athletic Training Program in July 2022. The undergraduate athletic training program has existed since 1969 and most recently received a 10-year continuing accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) in 2018. The successful candidate will join an existing team of 3 full-time athletic training faculty members.

UNM is the state's flagship research university as well as a Hispanic-Serving Institution classified a Carnegie Research University with Highest Research Activity. UNM also has strong connections with 23 tribal nations located within New Mexico. As such, successful candidates must be committed to working with broadly diverse student and community populations.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to teach a variety of graduate courses in the athletic training program, particularly related to clinical examination and diagnosis, from July-May annually. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to establish an active research agenda in the area of athletic training, mentor graduate students, contribute to ongoing CAATE accreditation maintenance, and actively engage in professional service to the University and respective field.

UNM is located in Albuquerque - a metropolitan area of more than 500,000 people - between the beautiful Rio Grande River and the picturesque Sandia Mountains. Albuquerque is a unique city with a blend of traditions, people, and cultures. The city has fantastic local cuisine, a variety of art galleries, sporting events, and easy access to a myriad of outdoor recreational opportunities.

Applicants who are appointed to a UNM continuing faculty position are required to provide an official certification of successful completion of all degree requirements prior to their initial employment with UNM. The successful candidate will also be required to obtain New Mexico Athletic Training Licensure upon starting their position. UNM is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and Educator.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Doctorate in Athletic Training (e.g. PhD, EdD, DAT) or a closely related field by contract start date, and,
  2. BOC Certification,
  3. Demonstrated ability to teach graduate courses athletic training,
  4. Contemporary expertise in clinical examination and diagnosis,
  5. Demonstrated ability or established record of scholarship in the field of athletic training,
  6. New Mexico Athletic Training Licensure or eligible.
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Experience teaching graduate courses in athletic training clinical examination and diagnosis,
  2. Previous clinical practice as an athletic trainer,
  3. Demonstrated record of publications and presentations; potential for obtaining external funding, and; able to establish an agenda of active research in the area of athletic training,
  4. Experience maintaining CAATE accreditation,
  5. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, student success, and working with broadly diverse communities, and
  6. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
