Job Summary:

This person, under the general supervision of the Chief Business Officer and Treasurer, provides direction and support within the department and is responsible for maintaining accounting ledgers of the College, proper documentation, control and disbursement of funds, preparing cash flow report, as well as special reports requested from the Chief Business Officer & Treasurer.  Primary emphasis includes supervision of the preparation of the college budget and financial statements, maintenance of appropriate records, quarterly financial projections, analytical reports (i.e. analysis of financial aid), risk management for the college and special projects as assigned.

The College: Founded in 1848, Muhlenberg College is a highly-selective, coeducational, residential liberal arts college located in Allentown, Pennsylvania, about 60 miles north of Philadelphia and 90 miles west of New York City. Allentown is a diverse city of 122,000 and anchors the third-largest metropolitan area in Pennsylvania. Along with neighboring Bethlehem and Easton, the region is home to a lively arts scene, a nationally unique parks system, and a rich blend of cuisine and diverse restaurants.

Characteristic Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supervises three direct reports and supports their professional development: Director of Accounting Services, Director of Budget and Financial Reporting, and Director of Student Accounts

  • Prepares College's annual 990 returns and presents drafts to Audit & Compliance Committee of the Board.

  • Oversees endowment accounting and reporting including investments, unitization and spending calculations.

  • Prepares annual NACUBO endowment survey responses.

  • Schedules and manages the College's annual independent audits.

  • Completes debt tests and compliance certificates relative to bond covenants.

  • Overseas the preparation & monitoring of the college-wide budget.

  • Supervises the preparation of year-end financial statements and closing of books.

  • Prepares schedules for auditors and all other financial related questionnaires.

  • Maintains salary and benefit cost records.

  • Maintains and reviews appropriate insurance coverage for college, including liability, auto and student insurance.

  • Processes insurance claims and ensures reimbursement to College when appropriate.

  • Provides risk management counsel to campus departments.

  • Reviews and makes recommendations for contracts the College is entering.

  • Serves as Chair of the Safety Committee.

  • Instructs and approves work for designated staff.

  • Completes special projects as assigned by the CBO & Treasurer.


  • Bachelor's Degree in Business with a major in Accounting (or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired) is required.  CPA preferred.

  • Minimum ten years of progressive financial experience preferred in fund accounting setting.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Procedures (GAAP), budgeting procedures, and public and/or fund accounting is essential.

  • The successful candidate will be able to assume full responsibility for analytical reports, financial statements, etc. including those required by outside auditors.

  • Extensive computer skills, including advanced knowledge of Google Workspace and Microsoft Office tools in analysis and reporting.

  • Experience with Workday Finance a plus.

  • Outstanding interpersonal relationship building and employee development skills.

  • Management experience in a team-oriented workplace.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a department and department staff members.

  • Strong quantitative skills required.

  • Must be comfortable with preparation of analytical computer based models.

  • Successful completion of background checks, including but not limited to child abuse clearance, credit check, education and national criminal background.
