Job Description and Goals: A Career Advisor offers individual career advising and the tools necessary to assist students and alumni with internship, co-op, research, graduate school and full-time job searches with a focus on creating successful career outcomes. The Career Advisor is responsible for developing positive relationships with students, alumni, employers, faculty, staff, parents and other constituents. A Career Advisor may serve in one or more of the following roles: Communications Coordinator – newsletters, social media, websites, advertising, student manual, reports; Undergraduate Experience Coordinator - internship/co-op tracking, administers career inventories, career readiness and preparation programing; International & Accessibility Coordinator – international student career preparation & programming, assisting students with various levels of accessibility, and assisting with diversity initiatives. Pre-Professional & Graduate School Coordinator – assist students with graduate school applications and testing, coordinate pre-law and pre-med preparation and programming (GRE, GMAT, LSAT etc.)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: (other duties may be assigned) 

  • Serve as a member of the Career Services & Employer Relations team and executes the goals and strategies laid out by the department and Director
  • Provide the tools and professional advice necessary to create successful career outcomes for students and alumni
  • Assist students on an individual basis with their career-related needs and goals while delivering ongoing support through their decision-making process. Topics will include but are not limited to: resume, cover letter and portfolio development, creating a career development plan, job search strategies, offering job interview assistance, reviewing and assisting with negotiating job offers, and helping them navigate the overall job search process
  • Help prepare students and alumni for graduate and pre-professional programs. This may include but is not limited to: GRE, GMAT, and LSAT preparation, personal statement reviews and curriculum vitae development and analyses
  • Administer and help interpret career inventories (e.g.) My Plan, Myers-Briggs
  • Track, compile and maintain data and assessments on students, alumni and employers in preparation for department analytics and data reporting for both internal and external audiences. Suggest mechanisms or areas for improved data/statistics tracking and reporting
  • Provide information, progress reports and necessary analytics to distribute or relay the during weekly department meetings or as requested
  • Assist with the execution and development of events, workshops and presentations. Events include but are not limited to: soft skills workshops, international student programming, diversity events, career fairs, freshman move-in weekend, homecoming, graduation, Parents Weekend, Party on the Patio and Student Resource Fair. Limited evening and weekend work may be required
  • Present our mission and goals both on and off-campus to a variety of constituents, such as: Admissions programs, prospective recruits and their families, community agencies, regional and national conferences
  • With the prior approval of the Director, maintain membership in state, regional, and national career services and employer relations organizations, present at their conferences and workshops when applicable and take on leadership roles when the opportunity presents 
  • Work in collaboration with the Employer Relations team to develop industry-specific opportunities for students
  • Continue education by attending approved state, regional and national conferences and other continuing education classes, workshops or online training to stay current on college recruitment trends
  • Help develop and maintain advertising, marketing, web site and social media content, brochures, manuals, catalogues, reports and any additional printed materials
  • Serve as a liaison to departments, students groups, clubs and organizations as assigned
  • Work with and assist other departments on campus as needed 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Serve on various college committees as assigned
  • Occasional evening and weekend office coverage and event attendance as required
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director or Associate Director

Qualifications: Master’s degree in Student Affairs/Higher Education, Human Resources, Student/College Counseling or related field preferred, Bachelor’s Degree required; Minimum of two years’ experience in career development, career counseling, recruiting, human resources or college admissions preferred; Basic computer skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc. required. Experience with database management, Power BI, career services software, graphic design, web tools, and social media is preferred; Polished presentation and oral communication skills required; Excellent writing skills required

Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations: Valid driver’s license with acceptable MVR (motor vehicle report) required.
