Job-Specific Responsibilities
The Office of Institutional Research, part of the Office of the Provost, supports Harvard's senior leadership through the collection, analysis, and reporting of data on issues of institutional importance. This position will report to the Associate Director of Institutional Research for Analytics. We are seeking a Senior Research Analyst to be a key contributor and collaborate with other team members to help realize the Office's goals of presenting important institutional data to diverse audiences and executing research projects that address strategic questions for the University. The ideal candidate will have experience with multiple steps in the data lifecycle, including data acquisition, cleaning, and processing, data analysis and visualization.

Activities may include:
  • Producing descriptive and inferential analyses;
  • Automating data and business processes;
  • Managing and reporting on data from a wide variety of sources;
  • Working with personnel across the University to collect and refine data;
  • Presenting to audiences internal and external to the University.
We are looking for a candidate who possesses the following attributes:

A candidate will be comfortable independently scoping, designing, and leading projects. Possible project topics include analyzing survey data, student outcomes, faculty trends, scholarly collaboration, and research funding, among others.

Basic Qualifications
Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications in order to be considered for this role:

Advanced degree required
A minimum of 7 years of experience in analysis within an academic or business setting. Education may count toward years of experience.

Additional Qualifications and Skills
The ideal candidate will also display strengths in several or all of the following areas:
  • Statistical and empirical analysis: Quantitative methods for policy and program evaluation; survey design; statistical packages such as R, Stata, or SPSS;
  • Programming and "Big Data": Ability to use current programming, infrastructure, and/or data ecosystems, (e.g., Python, Go, AWS, Apache Spark). Interest in large datasets and producing analyses from multiple, unstructured data sources; and/or
  • Data management: SQL and relational database design; data warehousing; process automation; business intelligence software; and/or
  • Data visualization: Tableau; advanced design of static and interactive visualizations in statistical software packages such as R/Shiny; HTML/CSS; JavaScript-based visualization packages; Illustrator;
  • Office productivity software: It is expected that successful candidates will have experience with the Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
Candidates may be asked to submit a sample of their work.
