The Church Lab invites applications for an immediate opening for a Research Scientist/Lab Manager. 

Our research focuses on new technologies for genomic & proteomic measurement, synthesis and modeling of biomedical & ecological systems -- in particular, personal genomics and biofuels. We have developed next-generation sequencing methods to analyze the output of combinatorial selections as well as comprehensive gene-environment-trait data for affordable personalized medicine. We reprogram human skin-derived pluripotent skin cells to connect cis-regulatory motif variants in populations to allele-specific and cell-type-specific RNA measures and further to causal effects on cell and larger-scale morphologies. We are developing tools for connecting functional microbiomics with (VDJ-ome) immune responses.

This position will have responsibility for daily research operations of leading a biomedical research laboratory in the Harvard Medical School Department of Genetics. Additionally, the individual will be responsible for the experimental design and execution of research projects relating to the work in the Church lab, which includes helping to provide research guidance to members of the research lab. Will assist lab members with obtaining required approvals for research involving biohazards, animals (IACUC), or human subjects (IRB). May help prepare scientific progress reports and grant proposals. This position will also be responsible for ensuring adherence to all appropriate safety regulations and performing and tracking safety training of lab members. Additional duties will include the implementation of HMS, Department and Lab policies which include data management, MTAs and other lab compliance responsibilities. Other duties may include managing weekly lab supply inventory, allocating/purchasing as needed, and serving as first-line approver of purchase requests.

Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required. Three + years of progressively responsible research/lab management, ideally in a biomedical/life sciences laboratory.

Additional Qualifications and Skills
PhD preferred
  • Experience with safety regulations and requirements in the areas of Biosafety, Radiation, and Chemical/Waste.
  • Familiarity with writing grant applications and reports.
  • Experience creating and administering lab systems, practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Operational knowledge of advanced lab equipment.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Must be organized, dependable, and possess good problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as oversee a team of researchers in conjunction with PI.
  • Ability to work well with others in a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong communication skills and a positive attitude.
  • Strong initiative and the ability to self-start are essential.
  • Ability to think creatively about functional improvements for how the lab operates and implement improvements as appropriate.
  • Ability to lift, move, and transport research related equipment up to 10 pounds required.

This is a 1-year term position with strong possibility of extension, contingent on work performance and continued funding to support the position.
