Job-Specific Responsibilities
HBS Human Resources is seeking a creative human resources professional to develop, design, and implement HR management solutions that enhance the organization's training and effectiveness. In this hands-on role, the Associate Director (AD) will drive workforce development programs that promote training, learning, leadership development, performance management, staff engagement, team collaboration, and change management. Reporting to the Director, HBS Human Resources, the AD will assess the current portfolio of talent management programming, and continue to develop the Learning & Development framework as well as design and deliver programs and services.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Develop comprehensive professional and career development programs including planning annual Learning & Development calendar aligning offerings with operational needs.
  • Develop a system to review and track talent that supports the HR planning process tied to the school's short and long-term strategic priorities.
  • Continue to strengthen the design, coordination and delivery of the HBS Leadership Development programs.
  • Lead the annual effort to recruit and schedule faculty for the HBS Faculty Series and the Leading@HBS series.
  • Analyze results of annual performance management program and initiate training and development opportunities to address skill gaps; manages design enhancements to performance development/planning process including potential web-based tools.
  • Promote and support the full cycle of performance management including planning, goal setting, coaching feedback and development planning. Design planning tools and coaching sessions to prepare staff and managers for development discussions.
  • Assess feedback from employee surveys/focus groups and develop additional methods for gathering info on training/development demands.
  • Maintain relationships with a network of trainers and coaches, both internally to Harvard and externally. Coordinate with other HR staff to ensure web access to on-line professional and career development tools.
  • Establish and deliver strategic communication plan regarding tools and resources.
  • Develop and deliver programs on career development (currently using the Strong Interest Inventory), collaborating with Harvard's Center for Workplace Development initiative on career development.
  • Consult with senior managers on department training needs (assess needs, broker trainers and develop programs).
  • Establish templates for succession planning including the use of 360-based assessment on an as-needed basis (currently using the Leadership Versatility Index).
  • Create orientation/training templates.
  • Work with departments to develop competencies, and assists with incorporating competency language into job descriptions, performance planning and training.
  • Manage and provide direction to one part-time FTE.
  • Oversee community engagement programs such as wellness and volunteerism.
  • Other duties as required.
Specific projects will include organizational assessments, managing the annual performance planning process, advising on/facilitating management retreats, change management, and school wide initiatives on team building, brainstorming, and skills development.

Basic Qualifications
  • BA/BS or equivalent degree required
  • Master's degree in training/organizational development (or related field) required
  • 8+ years of significant experience in human resources focusing on training and professional development, organizational assessment and retention programs required
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Consultative experience working with all levels of an organization.
  • Proven ability to research and assess existing organizational culture and structures and to develop new programs and approaches.
  • Proven ability to manage the logistics of a learning and development program.
  • Experience in higher education preferred, and/or experience working within a complex service organization.
  • Successful candidate will have deep curiosity about organizations, proven experience with state of the art training and professional development approaches, engaging interpersonal style in individual meetings/presentations, and inspire confidence through expertise and a proactive service-delivery style.
  • An interest in working with a small service delivery team who, together, provide a full range of HR services to the organization.
  • Experience with (or a willingness to obtain certification) diagnostic/assessment tools including, but not limited to ESCI, LVI, Disc, Strong Interest Inventory, and Myers Briggs strongly preferred.
Candidates with less than 8 years of direct experience may be considered for the grade 58 salary band.

During the current period of COVID-19 related restrictions, this position may start as a remote position with the transition to onsite at HBS campus in Boston, MA when the office reopens.
