The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and home to Cornell University's second largest population of students, faculty and staff. The Field Research Unit (FRU) supports faculty, staff and students engaged in field research. FRU manages all land, field facilities, and equipment used in support of field research. FRU provides basic services for research conducted in Station field plots including but not limited to site preparation, fertilization, and pesticide applications. FRU provides pesticide management services to all field programs at AgriTech.

Under very general supervision of the Associate Director for Farm Operations, serve as the primary mechanic for vehicles and equipment used in farm operation at AgriTech as well as supporting the rental fleet vehicle operations up to one day a week as needed with motor vehicle troubleshooting and repair work. Responsible for preventive and general maintenance, repairs, and scheduling equipment maintenance with outside providers when needed, for approximately 140 + pieces of farm related equipment, which includes 34 tractors, 9 trucks, a bulldozer, backhoe, pesticide equipment and a wide range of tillage equipment. Perform regular inspections on FRU equipment and monitor parts inventories. Coordinate, oversee, and schedule work being done in shop by FRU staff. Perform heavy equipment operations in support of farm operations and infrastructure maintenance and improvement such as bulldozer and backhoe work to accomplish block and trellis removals, installation and repair and maintenance of tiling and irrigation systems, trucking, and farm road maintenance. Track all shop work and work performed in field with work orders, recording time and materials used as required by Unit Leader. Assist other staff within FRU to resolve issues, utilize equipment and labor to accomplish mission of unit. Assist project leaders and staff on their field projects as needed. Attend educational and training meetings as required by University or Unit Leader. Maintain all required qualifications to fulfill job. Prioritize work and keep FRU Unit Leader informed of schedule, concerns and needs, to carry out the mission of the Unit.

Required Qualifications:
  • Formal training beyond a High School diploma of one to two years, two years' college course work, or Associates Degree or equivalent; more than two years' experience in farm and field operations.
  • Must be able to split a tractor into its separate cases (engine, transmission, and rear end) to facilitate and perform necessary repairs.
  • Must be familiar with Diesel Exhaust Fluid systems.
  • Must be able to diagnose, troubleshoot, source parts for, and repair a diesel and gasoline engines, vehicle electrical, and hydraulic systems as well as pumps used in agricultural applications, such as on spray equipment or irrigation.
  • Ability to design and fabricate customizations to existing equipment.
  • Must be able to manage an inventory of tools, parts, and supplies.
  • Must be able to work with vendors to procure parts and schedule outside repairs.
  • Must be able to prioritize work based on input from, and collaboration with, the farm's functional leads (perennial and annual crops, spray facility) and the unit leader.
  • Must be able to keep accurate records of procurement, including receipts, and promptly and accurately reconcile materials purchases with business service center personnel.
Working knowledge of basic computer programs such as Microsoft Excel and Word. Must possess or obtain within six months of employment a NYS Commercial Driver License (CDL), Class AR. Must possess and maintain valid driver license. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to wear proper protective equipment to avoid exposure to toxic chemicals, using extreme caution when handling and applying. Must be able to adapt to changing priorities, situations and demands. Work in all kinds of unfavorable weather conditions. Sound judgment, excellent reasoning and decision-making skills, meticulous record keeping and ability to work with diverse personalities. Must be able to work under pressure with a great deal of initiative. Proceed alone on regular tasks, consulting with supervisor on questionable situations. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects. Ability to work well with other is required while creating high-quality and respectful work environment. Must be able to work independently while supporting the efforts of an overall team. Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy with a wide range of internal and external clients. Must have demonstrated ability to handle sensitive / confidential material in a professional manner.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associates in Applied Sciences in agriculture with at least one year of experience working with heavy equipment in field or 3 years of related field experience.
  • No visa sponsorship is available for this position.
