Job Summary

The Counselor will actively participate in the Counseling Center's effort to provide mental health care, support, and related services to students as needed. Several of the chief tasks include counseling students, providing counseling intervention assessment, maintaining treatment records, providing crises intervention, providing follow-up care, supplying prevention information, participating in orientations, conducting prevention seminars and outreach, providing referral information, and orienting and training others.


Serve as counselor and provide mental health care and related services to students in need.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Provide mental health counseling services to students in need.
  • Provide crisis intervention, assessment, and support for students in emotional distress.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and an organized system of record keeping for each student receiving counseling services.
  • Provide crisis intervention services to students experiencing crises.
  • Provide follow-up care and assessments for students found in violation of the ONU alcohol policy. - Provide prevention information through workshops, outreach, health fairs and mental health screenings for students.
  • Participate in new student orientations. Provide referral information for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Collaborate with other professionals, departments, faculty, and staff in an effort to meet student needs.
  • Pursue continuing education as required for licensure.
  • Provide consultation services to other departments, faculty, and staff in an effort to meet identified student needs.
  • Correspond with external contacts to respond to inquiries to ensure quality of care for students.
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Skills
  • Ability to work in small groups or project teams.
  • Ability to solve problems through the identification and analysis of diverse issues.
  • Advanced knowledge of professional theories and practices within the given field and a working knowledge of related fields
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Counseling or a related field.
  • Five to seven years of similar work experience.
  • Ohio Licensure required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • LPCC with Ohio licensure.
