The School of Operations Research and Information Engineering (ORIE) at Cornell is consistently placed among a handful of leading Operations Research programs worldwide. Cornell's ORIE is a rigorous program with approximately 210 undergraduates, 100 Master of Engineering students, and 55 Ph.D. students. ORIE focuses on fundamental principles and methods but also uses contextual learning and design experiences to integrate the science with engineering. Our educational approach emphasizes a broad mastery of core disciplinary areas including methods of optimization, applied probability modeling and data science, manufacturing systems design and operation, and systems analysis and methodology. Application areas include the sharing economy in online market design, transportation, in e-Logistics and healthcare and a host of other settings. ORIE currently has 31 faculty (24 tenure track) faculty split between the Ithaca campus, Cornell Tech and Cornell Financial Engineering Manhattan.

What you will do:

Direct financial, administrative and facilities management functions on behalf of ORIE and the Department Faculty Director, with a dotted reporting line to the Associate Dean of Administration for the College of Engineering. Advise and assist the Faculty Director and department on financial, human resource, facilities and operational challenges. Provide direct oversight to 4 or more full-time staff members. Collaborate with and advise the Faculty Director on development and implementation of management strategies for short- & long-range fiscal, operational, facilities and human resource challenges. Serve as a member of the college administrative leaders group, with responsibilities to include setting direction for and leading college-wide administrative initiatives, identification and dissemination of best practices, representation of the college on university projects/committees, and identification and implementations of strategic administration directions. Participate in continuous learning and specialized training in key Administrative Director functional areas to enhance professional knowledge and skill.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work in partnership with the College Human Resources, Business Service Center, Facilities, and IT staff to ensure that ORIE's operational needs are met, are structured to meet departmental needs, and that compliance issues are addressed.

  • Function as financial officer of department, establishing and monitoring annual budget, developing financial projections and strategies, and interpreting gift agreements and grant proposals.

  • Establish and implement departmental operational standards and

  • Provide leadership in facilities and infrastructure management and work with various constituencies to implement facility maintenance plans and carry them out. Partner with College Facilities Director on renovation and construction projects.

  • Based on broad knowledge of department's goals and programs, develop and maintain procedures and practices that are in keeping with COE and university policies and best practices.

  • Serve as primary liaison to college and university financial, facilities, administrative, and human resource management units.

  • Promote an environment of effective teamwork by building functional relationships between multiple staff members.

  • Maintain a positive and cohesive departmental culture with a focus on promoting diversity, inclusion and strong sense of belonging. Play a leadership role for Belonging at Cornell activities within ORIE and across the college.

  • High visibility position with high level of responsibility, discretion and confidentiality.

This position is full-time and is located in Ithaca, New York. This position's primary work location will be on-campus with occasional ability for remote work.

What We Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in field related to business management or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

  • At least five years' experience and proven success in human resource management, facilities management , strategic planning, information technology management, and financial management and planning.

  • Experience organizing and managing a large group of employees who efficiently and effectively deliver a broad range of services to multiple groups of customers.

  • Ability to analyze issues, develop solutions, and implement actions independently and in a timely manner.

  • Ability to work well under pressure required.

  • Courteous customer service orientation required, including ability to assess service levels from team and ensure served populations are effectively supported.

  • Proven effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to negotiate and advocate effectively and tactfully.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a wide variety of responsibilities.

  • Ability to develop effective working relationships, exercise effective leadership skills, and function effectively as a team member and facilitator.

  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse workforce, including faculty, staff, and students.

  • Decision support system development and analytical skills required.

  • Thorough familiarity with spreadsheet software.

  • Ability to conceptualize and oversee design of databases and data collection methods, analysis and presentation to meet business reporting and decision-making needs required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Grant and contract management experience desirable.

  • Experience with capital planning, facilities and operational safety compliance, information technology management and facilities.

  • Experience with flat file and relational database systems desirable.

  • Effective financial management, budget preparation, and fiscal operations management in higher education or the public sector is preferred.
