JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The McEntaffer Research Group (mcentaffergroup.psu.edu) is looking to fill a postdoctoral position within the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Pennsylvania State University. The group specializes in the design, fabrication, and implementation of grating-based astronomical spectrographs. There are three main areas of our research group:

  • We study nanofabrication techniques for UV and X-ray reflection gratings.
  • We are involved with multiple NASA suborbital rocket launches.
  • We have several additional projects that have grown from our nanofabrication experience.

Applicants with a Ph.D. in Astronomy or Physics and experience in the three areas listed above are strongly encouraged to apply. Experience with the NASA suborbital rocket program is required. Experience with optics, nanofabrication, silicon-based detector systems, and electrical engineering is highly desirable. This position will lead the assembly and implementation of the Rockets for Extended-source X-ray Spectroscopy (tREXS) suborbital rocket payload. This involves alignment and integration of the optical system, alignment and integration of the grating arrays, management of the grating fabrication, testing and assembly of the detector, integration of the detector and associated electrical systems, implementation of the ground support equipment, and management of activities leading to and during NASA integration.

Applications must be submitted electronically and include a CV and contact information for three references.

This is a limited-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. The salary will be in accordance with postdoctoral salaries at Penn State.
