Summary
Stationary engineers under supervision, operate, maintain and adjust boilers, furnaces, engines, pumps, heat exchangers, generators, RO system, chillers, cooling towers, HVAC equipment, and other associated equipment through the Tulane campus. The Lead Operating Engineer takes full responsibility of the watch and is responsible for the operation of the entire plant and the monitoring of the building automation system located in the plant operation control room. The position's primary responsibility is to operate and control the operation of the boilers, chillers, pumps, generators, and auxiliary equipment in a safe and efficient manner during the assigned shift. The Lead Operating Engineer makes routine inspections, reads meters and gauges, performs water treatment test, and logs the data associated with each of these tasks, while maintaining his or her assigned station. The Lead Operating Engineer monitors all after-hours service calls, dispatching maintenance services and assuring that work orders are created, as well as checking building equipment rooms as required. This is an Essential Personnel position, which can require that the incumbent report for duty and work through emergencies. This position may also be designated by the supervisor as essential for the accomplishment of work, or for the completion of a critical task.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to work in confined areas in the physical plant, including the boiler room.
  • Ability to walk up and down ladders and stairs to check equipment and cooling towers.
  • Ability to handle chemicals and working with high pressure steam and condensate systems.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Knowledge of skilled trade principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, TMA, and web based control systems.
  • Superior organizational and customer service management skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with internal and external customers.
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings, weekends, and possibly holidays.
  • Ability to be present and punctual.
  • Ability to be available for campus emergencies.Great communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise continual personal career development.
  • Ability to encourage team work and ethics to promote a positive department image and direction.Leadership/management skills.
Required Education and/or Experience:
  • High school diploma
OR
  • Equivalent.Second class license in boilers, HVAC, Internal Combustion Engines.Valid CFC Certification.
  • Must have a valid and unrestricted (not including corrective lens needs) U.S. Driver's license and must meet the Tulane University Motor Vehicle Policy criteria to become authorized as a driver.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Trade school or college preferred


  • Experience working in an academic or hotel environment.
