Description of Work Unit

This position is in the Office of Creative Services, a department within the Division of University Communications. The department is responsible for the management of communications projects including coordination, graphic design, and photography for Colorado State University's colleges, divisions, departments, and units, while serving an integral role in the development and execution of the University's strategic marketing, graphic standards/branding and communications initiatives. This position will report to the Executive Creative Director.

Position Summary

Colorado State University seeks a seasoned creative design professional to serve as a Graphic Designer for University Communications in an internal marketing and communications team.

This position will be responsible for developing innovative design solutions to address client challenges while working within a group of creative professionals in a team environment. The successful candidate will exhibit modern design skills and possess experience in a variety of visual communications mediums, with an emphasis on publication (magazine) design. The position functions as creative contributor to various teams and individuals in a collaborative office environment. The candidate should show initiative, be able to provide constructive feedback, and be able to take direction.

Required Job Qualifications
  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education in graphic design, communications, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional design experience working in a collaborative team environment such as an advertising agency or design firm. Minimum of 3 years with publication (magazine) design experience.
  • Portfolio showing creative, contemporary design for variety of print and digital mediums, with a primary focus on publication design.
  • Demonstrated graphic design skills in a variety of mediums including publications, printed collateral, digital, and environmental as shown through portfolio.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Experience working with established and evolving brands and graphic standards.
  • High level of experience working on collaborative projects that include publications, print, web/electronic media, photography, video, and social media campaigns.
  • High level of experience creating publications and branded graphic design solutions.
  • Demonstrated skills in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
  • Experience solving complex visual communication challenges.
  • High level of communications skills.

Job Duty Category: Graphic Design - Publications

Duty/Responsibility
  • Act as a publication design specialist and provide design solutions and direction to guide publication work success as well as a focus toward elevating the work of the entire team. Consult with management on hiring talent along with providing input on developing new processes and procedures for publication work within the design department.
  • Provide design leadership and assistance to the design and project management team, relying on past experiences to help the group navigate creative challenges. Help grow and elevate design within the group. Help facilitate productive conversations and exercises that elevate the quality of the unit's creative work.
  • Meet with clients to gather project goals and form detailed creative briefs for the design team.
  • Work with designers per project and inspire them to push the boundaries of design thinking in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to solve complex problems, create strategic concepts, and manage through to meticulous execution.
  • Foster an environment of creative partnership and collaboration, providing guidance and leadership when necessary.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  • Work directly with the communications team to implement a consistent look, tone and feel for all communications efforts that leverage institutional brand standards and guidelines in all media platforms.
  • Collaborate with communications teams to plan, develop, implement, and manage marketing and communications plans and initiatives for the college's departments, and units that address and meet University strategic goals and objectives (advancement, funding, recruitment, academics, research, and environment).

Duty/Responsibility
  • Develop innovative conceptual solutions while working within a group of creative professionals in a team environment. This includes, but is not limited to, generating creative concepts for publication design and publication formatting, branding initiatives, digital and environmental solutions, while working with other creative, project, and leadership professionals across campus.
  • Work directly with key stakeholders to wireframe content, plan implementation, and design presentations, digital experiences, and design collateral in support of high-level University strategic initiatives.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
