Position Highlights

The University of Arizona (UA), College of Medicine - Phoenix (COMP) is seeking a licensed behavioral health counselor to provide short-term, confidential counseling, and crisis intervention for the College's residents and fellows.

We are looking for a strong behavioral health generalist, with a robust understanding of medical student/resident stressors and mental health difficulties. The ideal candidate will also be well versed in multicultural models of care.

This full-time position will be assisting with the high burnout, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation in the medical trainee population. This position will be overseen by the Director of Wellness and work closely with the College's mental health team. The position will operate from the COMP campus to offer in-person and telehealth therapy options to residents.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide culturally competent, evidenced-based psychological and other diagnostic evaluation, risk assessment, counseling, crisis management, brief treatment, and referrals, as indicated, to UA residents (individuals, couples, groups).
  • Provide counseling services to improve residents' resiliency to help prevent and/or minimize anxiety, depression and burnout.
  • Provide developmental coaching for professional sustainability.
  • Work with residents who are placed on program probation to assist with needed professional development.
  • Work with residents to develop new organizational strategies who are struggling to adapt to demanding schedule or balancing relationships due to work needs.
  • If and when pharmacologic treatment is necessary, works to transfer resident to EAP or insured provider to continue care if needed.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation in an electronic record system.
  • Host both in-person and video conferencing appointments depending on resident's preference and schedules. Specific hours will require some flexibility for at least one evening per week and/or occasional weekend appointments.
  • Assist the Director of Wellness to plan programming, curriculum, and relevant topics for programs, faculty, and house staff. Develops and implements strategies for a longitudinal approach to resident and fellow mental health and well-being.
  • Creates and participates in research around medical trainee wellness, burnout, and mental health and provides data and reports on usage and high-level themes to the CHIM Executive committee, AMC Education committee, Academic Well-being Collaborative and to local BUMCP/BUMG leaders to help inform the CHIM work and allow for guidance and feedback on the program.
  • Attends Academic Well-being Collaborative, weekly wellness meetings, monthly wellness committee meetings and provides annual review to the Graduate Medical Education Counsel.
  • Any additional related special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • This position requires a licensed counselor in good standing (LAC, LPC, MCSW etc.); AND
  • Master's degree or relevant degree with a major emphasis in counseling in compliance with the State of Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners. 
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience is typically required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently licensed as a Counselor in the State of Arizona.
  • Experience working with medical students or residents.
  • Experience in utilizing a brief therapy model of care.
  • Experience with couples therapy.
  • Experience and comfort in risk assessment, crisis assessment and management, mental health triage, brief psychotherapy and group treatment approaches.
  • Experience using a variety of screening and assessment instruments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and sensitivity to a wide range of personal diversity and multicultural issues, including trauma informed care.
  • Experience working with multi-cultural clients; perspective on working with first generation college students and underrepresented populations.
  • Experience/comfort speaking to groups of individuals about resources and other mental health issues.
