Reporting to the Vice President for Information Technology, the Lead Instructional Technologist will support the academic programs and faculty with the integration of technology in courses, utilizing the Instructure Canvas course management system, and other methods of delivery. This position is responsible for providing vision, leadership, creation, and coordination in designing, developing, and delivering courses and technology-enhanced instructional materials. The Lead Instructional Technologist will identify, develop, and lead the implementation of solutions that support teaching and learning in face-to-face, hybrid and online learning environments. The Lead trains faculty and staff in University standard applications. This individual will collaborate with members of the Information Technology team to provide excellent customer service to students, faculty and staff. This position administers and supports the Canvas LMS system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Oversee and manage Canvas, the University’s learning management system (LMS), including term dates, course building, coordination and release of updates, creation and maintenance of departmental organizations, permissions, installation and configuration of Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) apps, and more. Regularly engage key vendors and the users to ensure future improvements, upgrades and fixes are properly socialized and processed organizationally. Organizes the tasks at hand and coordinates the delivery of services with other team members.
  • Advise and assist faculty in developing and preparing teaching and presentation materials for the Instructure Canvas course management system and other methods of on-line delivery, such as podcasting and video teleconferencing.
  • Lead the support team to organize and create educational technology documentation and presentations ensuring ease of access and consumption. Create user and other documentation as needed, including knowledgebase and FAQ’s. Support the design, creation, and revision of online learning and training materials.
  • Plan, coordinate, and collaborate with the team to deliver training to faculty and staff on standard applications used throughout the university including MS Office and Instructure Canvas. Provide faculty training in educational technology based upon assessed needs through seminars, workshops, videos, and one-on-one sessions. Collaborate with the Center for Teaching (CTL) and Learning and the Committee for the Oversight of Blended and Online Learning (COBOL) in support of faculty development.
  • Research and evaluate instructional technology resources and their effectiveness.
  • Work with the CTL, COBOL, and IT staff to pilot technology-based learning materials. Chair a working group geared toward the identification and implementation of improvements to the learning environment including educational technology training and support. Stay current with new technologies related to teaching and learning.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in educational/instructional technology, instructional design, information technology, business information systems, or related discipline. Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least two years of experience as a Canvas administrator.
  • At least two years of experience in instructional/educational technology, including designing, developing, and managing technology-based instructional projects and assets.
  • Experience with WordPress, Adobe Connect, Camtasia.
  • Experience developing and delivering training and training materials.
  • Experience as a team/project leader on time sensitive requests.
  • Experience with Ellucian Colleague a plus.
  • Working knowledge with web-enabled course management software.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to lead projects, prioritize tasks, manage a complex workload, and use good judgment in providing services.
  • Demonstrated ability to assist faculty in course redesign for on-line teaching to meet pedagogical goals.
  • Possesses an in-depth understanding of instructional technology issues related to learning in online, hybrid/blended, and traditional courses, as well as experience using a range of hardware and software tools to develop multimedia assets and learning materials.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Capacity to work with people having a wide range of technical abilities.
  • Able to work one-on-one, with small and large groups, and as part of a team with members of IT staff to provide a high level of customer support.
