The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (E&EB) has a distinguished faculty of 24 whose interests range from population and community ecology to biogeochemistry and ecosystems to evolutionary biology and genetics. The Department, part of both the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences, has a broad but unified mission in teaching and research: broad in that the interests of the faculty span many levels of organization encompassing genes, genotypes, phenotypes, populations, communities, and ecosystems; and unified in that each of these levels interacts with all of the others. Detailed appreciation of the processes operating at all levels of organization is fundamental to ecological or evolutionary understanding.

Under the supervision of the Department Administrative Manager (AM), provide various financial and accounting support as they relate to financial activities of the department. These responsibilities relate both to departmental operations and accounts, as well as sponsored grants and contracts for assigned faculty. As a provider of financial services to Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, make appropriate judgments about financial activities in a manner that coincides with the University's policies, sponsors' regulations and practices of both colleges. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with College Business Service Units, University central offices (e.g. Sponsored Program Services), and the faculty, staff and students of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Work closely and collaboratively with the Department AM, College Business Service Centers and other shared Biology units on an Ecology & Evolutionary Biology department streamlining effort aimed at developing, documenting and implementing the more effective, efficient and compliant department operational processes. Further, establish and maintain close working relationships with department and other shared Biology unit accounting staff to foster team work and collaboration with defining, documenting and implementing consistent policies and best practices.

Important note: All responsibilities of this position are performed for both Endowed and Contract College faculty and departmental financial activity, and require full knowledge of both entities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Formal training beyond a HS Diploma of 1 to 2 years, 2 years college coursework, or Associates Degree; Two to 4 years concentrated experience in a financial office setting.
  • Must be able to understand and accurately apply account numbers, object codes, rules to transactions and understand impact on financial statements.
  • High level of proficiency with MS Excel, MS Word and other basic computer applications.
  • Familiarity with sponsored programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Must have excellent customer service skills and demonstrated ability to communicate and work with a broad range of people.
  • Attention to detail, organizational skills and prioritization skills are required.
  • Able to work quickly, effectively under pressure; use judgment in accomplishing tasks that are urgent or of a sensitive or confidential nature; balance conflicting priorities; and make decisions from a range of choices.
  • Demonstrate ownership accountability in all work responsibilities.
  • Must be comfortable working in an environment where change in process/procedures is the norm.
  • Must be able to work independently while supporting the efforts of an overall team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Cornell policies and procedures in accounting preferred (sponsored project, travel, purchasing, etc...)
  • Cornell University Research Administration Training Certification
  • Expertise in Excel, KFS, Workday and OBIEE dashboards
  • Demonstrated ability to identify areas or operating tasks in need of improvement and implement job related process improvements within the areas in need
