Clemson University's Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management (Clemson PRTM) is seeking a visionary, creative and entrepreneurial leader to serve as Professor and Department Chair beginning with the 2022-23 academic year. The Chair will report directly to the Dean of the College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences (CBSHS), which includes the following departments: Communication; Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management; Political Science; Psychology; Public Health Sciences; Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice; and the School of Nursing.

Clemson PRTM is among the most innovative, comprehensive, and successful programs of its kind in the nation and the world. We serve 359 undergraduate majors and 162 graduate students, with learning options in six areas of focus, including community recreation and sport management, park and conservation area management, recreational therapy, travel and tourism, youth development leadership, and nonprofit leadership (undergraduate certificate and minor). Our alumni use their degrees as launchpads into parks, recreation and tourism management careers, but also find their skills applicable to business, conservation, public health, marketing, communications and several other fields.

We employ 44 full-time faculty and 21 professional staff. Our tenure-track faculty published an average of 8.2 peer reviewed journal articles in 2019 and generated $996,000 in research expenditures. Our national and global research presence includes three centers and institutes (Institute for Parks, Clemson Outdoor Lab and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute), four self-sustaining and revenue-generating initiatives (Leisure Skills program, Summer Scholars, Momentum Bike Clubs and the U.S. Play Coalition) and four innovative labs targeting Adaptive Sport and Recreation, Parks Solutions, Virtual Reality and Nature, and the REYSE Collaboratory, which focuses on youth development through a social justice lens. Position Expectations:
The expectations of the Chair include, but are not limited to:
  • Provide visionary leadership to advance a culture of collaboration, transparency, and excellence.
  • Enhance social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusive excellence among faculty, staff, and students in our department.
  • Manage and build financial resources necessary to accomplish the mission of the department (current budget is over $6 million).
  • Execute and adapt the PRTM strategic plan to ensure alignment with and support of our college and university level strategic plans.
  • Actively advocate for a multi-disciplinary department and its faculty, staff, students and enterprises.
  • Enhance our strong state, national, and international reputation and increase our reach and impact.
QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifications:
Candidates should have a strong commitment to strengthening a multi-disciplinary department; achieving the department, college, and university's strategic plans; and supporting the mission of teaching, research, and service at an R-1 institution. Our department has been proactive in its commitment to increasing social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion among our faculty, staff and students. It is extremely important that our next Chair be committed to the Department's and Clemson University's social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion goals.

Applicants must have the qualifications and record to be hired at the rank of full professor and meet the departmental qualifications for tenure.

The ideal applicant will provide specific evidence of:
  • Experience with consensus-based shared faculty governance;
  • Academic administrative experience (e.g., fiscal, human resources, operations, policy, development)
  • Success in managing multi-faceted academic/program units;
  • Effective communication with internal and external stakeholders;
  • National demonstrated reputation for excellence in research and teaching;
  • Experience in securing resources (e.g., major grants, donations, contracts, public/private partnerships, enterprise operations); and,
  • Strong transformational leadership approach, with demonstrated acumen in organizational and interpersonal skills.
