Job Summary
This position will be based on our campus in Cambridge, MA. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic this position will be remote until further notice.

Alumni Affairs and Development (AA&D)comprises the University Development Office (UDO), Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Development, AA&D Resources, and the Harvard Alumni Association (HAA). There is a unique relationship between the University and the FAS fundraising operations, resulting from a long history in which University fundraising ultimately grew out of College fundraising.

Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Development
FAS Development is responsible for the fundraising efforts supporting the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, including Harvard College, the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. FAS Development staff work with Harvard College donors, alumni, parents, and friends who provide critical support for the FAS and often for other parts of the University.

Business Intelligence Team Summary:
The Alumni Affairs and Development (AA&D) Business Intelligence team collaborates with departments across the University to identify and implement solutions that support the AA&D initiatives through data-driven decision making. The team is also responsible for adhoc data analysis, trending, and predictive modeling. The team delivers customer focused service in the areas of business requirements/solutions development, business intelligence, project management and implementation, education, and end user support.

The Lead Data Analyst will provide expert analysis to fundraising executives at assigned Harvard Schools and Units. This person will leverage the infrastructure of central AA&D resources and provide analytics tailored to School's specific business questions and goals. They must have the vision and strategic skills to identify and implement solutions, and will need strong data querying and transformation skills, at times working directly with transactional systems.

Job-Specific Responsibilities
  • Creates analysis for School's executive teams to guide decisions related to managing fundraising & engagement programs.
  • Develops deep knowledge of unique needs and requirements of client Schools and ensures knowledge is applied in all appropriate queries, documents, and analysis
  • Works with Major/Capital gift leadership at the School to analyze fundraising portfolios and prospect management. Identifies opportunities to cultivate new donors.
  • Establishes a consistent scoring methodology to enhance over all prospect identification and engagement efforts and continues to hone and train model over time.
  • Develops model for annual cash projections to inform school budgeting processes
  • Identifies opportunities for segmentation or messaging that drives direct marketing, and alumni engagement.
  • Distills complex data into effective visualizations that support end-user understanding and utilization of information
  • Utilizes best practices for data visualization to deliver presentation-ready analysis for internal or external audiences
  • Writes narrative companions to visual analyses, bringing an understanding of context and reasoning to recipients of information
  • Presents findings, often in small to moderate sized meetings with Senior Leadership
  • Creates forecasting models designed for longer term goal setting and strategic planning
  • Cultivates and maintains expertise on AA&D data; Provides consultation to users to enhance their understanding of information
  • Mines the data to surface unknown business drivers
  • Works with the Business Process Analyst to identify solutions to address gaps in data or new data collection needs
  • Develop project proposals, recommendations, implementation plans, communication packages, performance measurement tools, and training materials related to assigned projects
  • The above covers the most significant responsibilities of the position. It does not however, exclude other duties, the inclusion of which would be in conformity with the level of the position.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required.
Minimum of six (6) years of experience, with a background in data analysis, data engineering, statistics, advancement operations or prospect research.

Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • 3+ years of experience developing models & analysis in common analytic, statistic or reporting software, such as Qlik, R, SPSS, Tableau or OBIEE.
  • Experience working in fundraising or non-profit administration strongly preferred.
  • Preference given to experience with QlikView and/or financial analysis.
  • Must be have solid understanding of data visualization principles and ability to effectively communicate information through well designed graphs.
  • Must be eager to learn a wide variety of processes and systems and must proactively cultivate relationships with partners across various offices and campuses.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks under competing deadlines and shifting priorities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Critical attention to data security and risk management
  • Evaluates problems accurately and displays sound and confidential judgment.
  • Must have an even disposition and be able to work effectively and politely with all people from all types of backgrounds and experience and in all types of situations.
  • Must have ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Expertise to leverage complex programming and coding within statistical modeling tools.
  • Public speaking and presentation skills required.
  • Communicates complex concepts effectively with technical staff and non-technical staff.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. Requires superb organizational skills.
