Job-Specific Responsibilities
The Assistant Director of Academic Compensation collaborates with department stakeholders and senior administrators to analyze and advise on faculty and other academic salary offers; including base salary, supplemental pay, and other terms of appointments. The role provides strategic consultation to the Executive Dean of Administration in maintaining the competitiveness of academic compensation. The role is responsible for improving the processes for academic compensation work, including the analysis of academic compensation and writing and vetting offers and salary increase letters associated with promotions or merit increases.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Analyze and recommend salary amounts for assistant, associate, and full professors in pre-clinical
  • Perform internal and external equity reviews using available tools, QlikView and Payfactors departments as well as other academics, including research scientists, lecturers, and instructors
  • Recommend internal tenure promotion offers for the faculty in the Quad-based pre-clinical departments, including salary and supplemental pay
  • Develop process for drafting and coordinating offer letters
  • Track the progress of offers; manage requests for data and reporting on faculty and other academic offers; distribute and retain offer letters and related documents as appropriate
  • Ensure alignment with strategic stakeholders, including Pre-Clinical Chairs, Department Administrators, and senior leaders in the Executive Dean's Office, Dean's Office, Office of Faculty Affairs, Office of Finance, Office of Research Administration, and the Office of Postdoctoral Fellows
  • Work with the EDA and other senior leaders on annual faculty salary reviews for the pre-clinical faculty to be presented to the Medical School Dean
  • In collaboration with senior leaders, develop and implement compensation policies and processes that support HMS's broad academic and administrative goals
  • Draft correspondence, prepare briefings, and carry out research and special assignments as requested
  • Stay abreast of current faculty pay practices and trends including participation in faculty surveys as needed

Typical Core Duties
  • Conduct market studies and perform in-depth analysis to develop base pay and variable pay programs
  • Design market survey instruments in collaboration with consultants and survey vendors to better meet the needs of the Harvard University community
  • Collaborate with third party consulting and legal firms to validate and ensure competitive and compliant executive compensation programs
  • Assess compensation community needs; design and implement compensation communication strategy in collaboration with other HR service providers
  • Provide University wide compensation processes, updates, and services including salary ranges, structure movement, and merit budget proposal
  • Provide project management for short and long term projects
  • Facilitate and chair University wide compensation committees
  • Ensure compliance with University Human Resources policies, procedures, and requirements and applicable legal regulations
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 8 years' relevant work experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills
Knowledge of working with faculty is highly desirable. Experience with HRIS and compensation practices and tools desirable. Excellent analytical, oral and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to handle confidential matters with discretion.

This Staff role is starting as a remote position due to the COVID-19 pandemic and while the Massachusetts COVID-19 state of emergency restrictions are still in place. The current remote nature of this role is considered temporary and may change as the University continues to evaluate options. While we continue to monitor the evolving COVID-19 guidelines, local on-campus work may be expected for some roles. Harvard Medical School does support flexible schedules, subject to individual departments' business needs.
