Assistant Rowing Coach - Rowing
The West Virginia University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics seeks a Second Assistant Coach for the Women's Rowing program. The successful candidate will work with other coaching and supporting staff members striving to fulfill the mission of WVU Athletics to provide the means to empower student-athletes to develop as leaders and achieve their full potential academically, athletically, and personally.
The Second Assistant Coach will maintain knowledge of and comply with all rules, regulations, policies, and guidelines of West Virginia University, the Big 12 Conference, and the NCAA; must be certified per NCAA Bylaw 220.127.116.11 each year; and must adhere to NCAA Bylaw 11.1 Conduct of Athletic Personnel.
The Second Assistant Coach must represent the University on the highest professional level with dignity, integrity, and strength of character, will exhibit ethical behavior, and must respect the rights and dignity of individuals with sensitivity to problems that may arise from racial and ethnical differences.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
- Work with all coaching and supporting staff members to effectively manage the day-to-day operations of an NCAA Division 1 rowing program. Operations include but are not limited to areas of training, competition, mentoring, recruiting, promotion, equipment, and administrative assignments.
- Develop student-athletes in a collaborative effort in all aspects/regards with primary coaching assignments for training and competition evolving over the course of the year.
- Support and promote the academic progress of student-athletes in conjunction with and support of the team's academic advisor.
- Recruit prospective student-athletes including coordination of many recruiting-related events and activities such as visits and travel.
- Promote the women's rowing program via web, print, and social media along with in-person appearances and Mountaineer Athletic Club activities.
- Assist in the maintenance of all team equipment and management of team-issued clothing and gear.
- Manage all administrative obligations and assignments in a timely manner.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the head coach.
- Bachelor's degree.
- One (1) year of coaching experience, preferably at NCAA Division I level. Experience as a Graduate Assistant is acceptable.
- Maintain high standard of ethics and integrity related to intercollegiate athletics.
- Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics.
- Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA and conference guidelines, policies, rules and regulations with the ability to interpret, apply, enforce and explain such policies and rules.
- Successfully complete NCAA certification exam annually.
- Maintain knowledge of state and University policies and procedures.
- Exhibit strong creative, organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of correct English, grammar, spelling, punctuation and sentence structure.
- Demonstrated ability in public speaking skills.
- Demonstrated ability to function professionally under high stress and confrontational circumstances.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks for extended period of time.
- Demonstrated ability to independently plan and organize work.
- Proactive attitude towards work and assignments.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain and develop personal contacts with outside groups, i.e. student-athletes, professional representatives, fans, media, donors, University community.
- Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
- Demonstrated knowledge of record keeping and adherence to schedule Ability to stay abreast of information impacting the affected area.
- Demonstrated ability to organize and motivate groups and individuals Ability to maintain proper unit attendance and punctuality standards, work extended hours including nights and weekends (often with extensive walking and standing).
- Demonstrated knowledge of effected areas of involvement.
- Ability to make administrative / procedural decisions and judgments.
