Position Summary

The Messiah University Department of Social Work invites applications for a full-time Visiting Professor and Interim Chair of the Department of Social Work. The successful candidate is welcome to apply for a full time term-tenure track position, search to be opened in the fall of 2021.


Duties include fulfilling the duties of a chair of the Social Work program as well as teaching in the Social Work program. Specific teaching assignments and administrative loading is negotiable pending the qualifications and expertise of the applicant, with a minimum of 25% of the load in administrative duties as required by accreditation standards.


We seek an experienced, flexible, and committed Christian professional willing to step in to an interim leadership position as the Department of Social Work begins the process of seeking long term leadership for the program. Administrative experience is required, with leadership in an academic social work program strongly preferred. The successful candidate will be required to maintain the assessment processes and reporting necessary to being a program accredited by the CSWE, as well as ensuring compliance with the standards of excellence developed by the department as part of its accreditation process. Therefore, familiarity with CSWE standards or similar accreditation forms and processes is required. The Successful candidate will be required to teach in the Social Work program, therefore evidence of the ability to teach a variety of Social Work courses is required. Candidates must demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence in a Christian context. The successful candidate must minimally hold an M.S.W. from a CSWE-accredited program with a Doctorate preferred. Candidates must have at least 2 years of post-master's social work degree practice experience.

The Program

The mission of the Social Work Department at Messiah University is to offer a professional degree with a strong liberal arts foundation that trains graduates for ethical and competent generalist social work practice at the entry level and/or prepares them for graduate study. Guided by the accreditation standards of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) as well as the Mission and values of Messiah University, the Department integrates principles of the Christian faith with social work values, knowledge, and skill. Therefore, there is a commitment to evidence informed practice, service learning at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels, a commitment to community, a respect for diversity and human rights, and support for the enhancement of social and economic justice for all people.

The Department

The Social Work major focuses on developing the skills and competencies to become a professional social worker. The major is intentional about providing a balance of classroom learning with field experience so that graduates will be prepared to work in a wide range of human service agencies or to attend graduate school.

Salary and rank commensurate with qualifications and experience.
