Quality Manager - Animal Health Diagnostic Center, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University

The Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC) is a high visibility and high volume veterinary diagnostic laboratory that promotes the health, productivity, and welfare of food-and fiber-producing animals, companion animals, and zoo and wildlife populations. Through its comprehensive veterinary diagnostic services, the AHDC detects animal diseases and supports animal and public health, promotes environmental stewardship and fosters economic growth.

As the Quality Manager, you will leverage your understanding of quality systems and regulatory expectations to develop and oversee evaluation, application, and maintenance of organizational and diagnostic quality system policies, processes and operating procedures, tools, and software applications. The Quality Manager is a key member of the AHDC administrative operations team. This position works in partnership with colleagues and stakeholders both within and outside of the organization, as well as with external auditors, to ensure compliance with American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) and ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation standards, and to support studies performed under Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) requirements. You will:

  • Serve as the quality subject matter expert to oversee, interpret and advise on quality standards, regulations and quality-related programs;
  • Oversee the organization's document management processes;
  • Partner with AHDC Administration to define, compile, analyze and interpret data to evaluate quality and quality performance, identify trends and recommend improvements;
  • Develop and manage training and education programs to drive understanding and compliance.
  • Guide root cause analyses and risk assessments to effectively resolve or prevent nonconformities;
  • Oversee and evaluate proficiency testing programs;
  • Schedule, conduct and oversee internal quality assurance audits; prepare AHDC staff for, and coordinate external audits;
  • Serve as the Quality Unit to ensure compliance for studies performed under Good Lab Performance (GLP).

You will use your systems thinking to oversee the effective and practical application of quality standards to scientific processes. Highly collaborative, with exceptional communication skills, you will successfully work across levels to maintain effective compliance activities and to evaluate, detect and analyze gaps and find creative solutions for problems. You will have experience using your professional judgement to make decisions and guide others in a fast paced, multifaceted and diverse environment. The position requires that you have:

  • A bachelor's degree, with at least three years of quality systems management experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Extensive knowledge of implementing, monitoring and maintaining a Quality System;
  • Thorough knowledge of industry quality standards including International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP);
  • Proficiency with quality, compliance, and document control software applications, with the ability to learn new software quickly.
  • Experience participating in, and ability to lead auditing procedures.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; highly collaborative with an affinity for building and maintaining strong working relationships.
  • Excellent initiative and self-management practices to successfully oversee and organize competing priorities to meet deadlines.

The following will be helpful in the position:

  • Familiarity with the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) Quality Standard and requirements;
  • Familiarity with World Organization for Animal Health (OIE, Office International des Epizooties) standards;
  • Experience using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS);
  • Experience evaluating and comparing the effectiveness of various software applications;
  • Familiarity with veterinary medicine or diagnostic testing;
  • Cornell Leadership Experience;
  • Knowledge of Cornell policies and procedures.
