Job Summary

The PISA advisor works to assist students in identifying direction, engaging with high impact activities / services, and accomplishing goals. Specifically, advisors are committed to the leadership development of the student organizations and providing a place for connection and advocacy within the Center for Ethnic Student Affairs (CESA). This role is committed to student support, success, and guidance, including moral support. There is also a focus on programming and coaching for students.

  • This posting is for the Pacific Islander Student Association (PISA) Advisor
  • This is a time-limited, 2 year position. With possible one year extension.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities:

  • Participates in community engagement, including interactions with high school students, and participating in community events.
  • Support outreach to potential student members during their first year attending the University of Utah.
  • Collaborates with community groups
  • Effectively connects CESA staff and programming to PISA
  • Fosters an environment where PISA students can participate in dialogue, events, and programming specifically designed for their organization.
  • Advocates for students and direct them to resources, through strong knowledge of campus resources.
  • Fosters an environment that encourages and provides supports for the board and members to attain and maintain academic success.
  • Develops lasting connections with members on campus and in the community which will allow students to be directed to appropriate people and resources.
  • Provides space for PISA members to visit the office to speak freely about academic or personal matter.
  • PISA is a student lead group. The Advisor does not replace the student leaders, but will support this student group.
Essential Functions
  • Makes referrals for students who need assistance with overcoming learning obstacles, specialized tutoring, extended or intensive assistance with career decisions or similar needs.
  • Develops and presents education programs designed to supplement or enhance academic preparedness.
  • Supports and participates in the advising-related portion of new/transfer student and parent orientation sessions.
  • Coordinates data compilation, statistical reports and correspondence, depending upon the area of assignment.
  • All other duties as assigned.

  • Actively work with the Pacific Islander Initiative through the University of Utah P.I. Studies Program.
  • Ability to work with P.I. educators in the K-12 & at peer institutions.

Problem Solving:

  • The ability to be sensitive to the needs of diverse student populations, such as non-traditional and minority students and students with disabilities is a necessity. Incumbents must also be able to interpret student needs and determine when referral to other University resources is appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field plus one year directly related experience or equivalency required (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education). Demonstrated ability to work independently, analyze and make decisions related to program content. Strong coordination and organizational skills required to prioritize conflicting deadlines. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.
