Work in a team based environment providing daily care and treatment of mainly horses, but also a various number of other species, including, sheep, pigs, goats and bovine used in teaching and research housed in KLM/Equine Park Barns. Care includes feeding, cleaning, and managing other daily requirements. Provide close concentration and visual attention to behavioral signs of animals in order to prevent injury to animal or personnel. Report health concerns, abnormalities, and behavioral changes to manager. Assist class instructors with demonstrations such as restraint and handling, identification of horses and student instruction. Assist researchers with procedures and special animal handling for various research projects. Coordinate movement of animals with manager to accommodate teaching and research needs. Train and supervise student and casual employees on all aspects of the various species housed in the facility.

Must obtain knowledge of Federal, State and IACUC regulations required to maintain the facility in compliance with these regulations. Required to move more than 50 lbs. with repetitive activity such as moving bales of hay and bedding. Must be available to work weekends, holidays and evenings as assigned.

This is a full-time (39 hours/wk) position.

Required Qualifications:

  • Formal training in related field beyond a HS Diploma of 1 to 2 years and 2 - 4 years of related experience in horse management and handling of various types of animals or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Ability to implement biosecure measures and knowledge of possible cross-species zoonotic concerns is required. Able to drive a truck and trailer to move horses as needed.
  • Excellent communication skills and strong attention to detail required.
  • Must be able to move more than 50 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree or coursework in Animal Science or related field.
  • Experience in multi species management, providing management instruction in a formal setting, and working with broodmares, foals and stallions. ALAT Certification.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and IACUC regulations.
  • Knowledge of pig, sheep, goat, and bovine husbandry skills is preferred.
