The Senior Transfer Partnership Advisor is responsible for providing intensive and individualized support to a caseload of Direct to Success (D2S) transfer students serving as a guide for academic, career, and personal support, while also connecting the student to wraparound supports and university resources as they transfer to NLU and persist toward graduation. This person will help continue to develop an equity-minded holistic advising/coaching model that supports students academically as well as personally and professionally and is specifically tailored to the needs of a D2S student at NLU.

This position will work closely with the Enrollment, Student Affairs and the Undergraduate College (UGC) to support and build a community for the inaugural class of D2S students, continuously evaluating and refining the support model based on feedback. The Senior Transfer Partnership Advisor is the main support person for an assigned population of approximately 100-150 undergraduate students at the Chicago, Wheeling and Online campuses during their enrollment at the institution and has primary responsibility for resolving barriers to retention and providing proactive, holistic support.

This position advises students on academic programs, curriculum, college and university academic policies and procedures focused on fostering their retention by developing, implementing and monitoring an academic action plan for success. This position is under the supervision of the Executive Director of Academic Advising Learning Support, with a dotted line to the UGC Director of Transfer Strategy and is a member of the Provost division, working closely with faculty and with staff from other University departments to provide students a comprehensive support model and effective referrals.

Responsibilities and Outcomes:
  • Provide single point of contact advising to an assigned group of undergraduate transfer students from admission through graduation. The Transfer Student Coordinator should ensure students are eligible to continue their degree and registered for courses on their degree plan on a quarterly basis as well as effectively communicating curriculum and graduation requirements in accordance with University policies.
  • The Advisor should use in-person engagement (sometimes modified to virtual face-to-face engagement) and technology (texting and calls) for interventions to stay in close communication with their caseload of students – using developmental and intrusive advising practices as well as motivational interviewing when students are struggling to overcome barriers. Maintain accurate and timely student records in platforms such as: BANNER, EAB, and Smartsheets, for which training will be provided.
  • Build collaborative relationships with academic program faculty, Department Chairs and staff to ensure a cohesive student experience. Works collaboratively with the Enrollment team to ensure a smooth start and on-boarding process for matriculation. Attend Student Success Collaboration, Transfer Strategy, Career Success Team, Advising & Learning Support and any other meetings regularly in order to provide a bridge between students, faculty, and career development.
  • Assists in participation in and/or promotion of events, programming and services offered by other University departments such as Student Engagement, Career Bridge, Learning Support, Office of Disability and Access Services, Student Finance Office and more.
  • Support the community college transfer student enrollment process by providing early academic advising and student engagement assistance to the transfer Enrollment team as needed, and support the development of a playbook for early engagement with community college transfer students.
  • Other duties as assigned to support student transitions, persistence toward graduation, student’s satisfaction and sense of belonging and sustainable employment in their major upon completion

Competencies, Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in teaching, academic advising, counseling social work or closely related field.
  • 1-3 years of experience working with a diverse population of students
  • Personally demonstrates that external and internal customers are a high priority. Identifies customer needs and expectations and responds to them in a timely and effective manner. Anticipates and prevents delays or other things that can adversely affect the customer. Keeps customers informed about the status of pending actions and inquires about customer satisfaction with products or services.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time to ensure that deadlines are met. Prevents or manages interruptions until the highest priority tasks are accomplished.
  • Strong communication skills with a variety of different stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff and other team members.
