MMGE - MOLECULAR GENETICS (IN-MOLG-IUINA)

One of the first human genetics departments in the country, the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at IU School of Medicine has a rich history of training geneticists and genetic counselors and providing genetic consultation and counseling services. Currently ranked 5th in the nation among Genetics Departments for NIH Funding, received in 2023, the department contributes to the understanding of numerous genetic conditions through the integration of basic research in genetic and genomic mechanisms, translational research in disease models, and clinical trials in rare and common genetic diseases.

The primary purpose of this position is to study the genetics and function of a hormone that regulates bone mineralization. The responsibilities include molecular/cell biology experiments on cells and on tissue samples from animal models.

Department Specific Responsibilities

• DNA/RNA/protein extractions from tissue/cells to perform various molecular and cellular biology techniques.
• Routine laboratory procedures (e.g., solution prep, equipment monitoring, cleaning etc.), lab maintenance.
• Data management, DNA/RNA analysis/characterization (electrophoresis, PCR, spectrophotometry), reports/presentations.
• Monitors and genotypes portions of a mouse colony, working with mice.

General Responsibilities

• Monitors inventory levels of needed materials, supplies, and equipment in support of research projects.
• Prepares supplies for appropriate use in field experiments.
• Sets up experiment apparatuses according to established protocols.
• Prepares reports and maintains all relevant documentation.

EDUCATION

• Prior experience with molecular biology and animal handling experience.

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Reads and implements laboratory protocols, have good math skills, keep organized records and prepare reports as needed, communicate effectively verbally and in writing, interact effectively with researchers providing and requesting samples, work on multiple tasks concurrently when needed, be flexible and prepared to respond to prioritize changing laboratory demands/tasks.

Regular attendance at job, various routine physical activities associated with laboratory work including, but not limited to: some bending (e.g., to retrieve samples), moving, cleaning, carrying objects, standing, sitting etc. Objects to be moved include, but not limited to: reagent bottles, samples and racks of samples, boxes of laboratory supplies, portable liquid nitrogen storage vessels.
